Westmoreland Campus Clippings: Hempfield's Holmberg wins Big Ten

Penn State’s Maddie Holmberg, a Hempfield grad, won the pentathlon at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Penn State senior Maddie Holmberg captured her first indoor track and field conference title by winning the pentathlon over the weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Championships at SPIRE Institute.

Holmberg, a Hempfield alum, finished with 4,274 points to become the Nittany Lions’ second conference title winner in the pentathlon.

The point total is a career best for Holmberg.

She finished second in the shot put (14.13 meters), third in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 16.4 seconds), fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.5), tied for seventh in the high jump (5 feet, 4.5 inches) and fourth in the long jump (19 feet, 5.25 inches).

The 60 time also was a season best for Holmberg.

DePaul: Freshman Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) won the shot put at the Big East Championships with a personal-best toss of 15.13 meters.

Duquesne: Junior Gabby Holmberg (Hempfield) ran a leg of the winning 1,600 relay team at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The team won gold in a time of 3:45.56.

Saint Vincent: The distance medley relay team of sophomore Alissa Beam, senior Jessica Brinker, junior Danielle Butler and sophomore Sydney Green (Latrobe) took first at the PAC Championships with a time of 13:24.47, a school record.

Men’s indoor track & field

DePaul: Junior Alex Murray (Hempfield) finished third in the weight throw at the Big East Championships with a distance ot 15.87 meters, a personal best.

Saint Vincent: The team of senior Will Greene, junior Frankie King (Greensburg Salem), senior Tyler Laughery (Norwin) and sophomore Collin Wilson (Latrobe) won the distance medley relay at the PAC Championships in a time of 11:00.33. King also took first in the mile in 4:23.84, and Greene won the 3,000 in 8:48.10.

Baseball

Ohio: Redshirt sophomore pitcher Jack Liberatore (Greensburg Central Catholic) tossed six innings, allowing four hits and striking out five, but the Bobcats fell to Southeast Missouri State, 3-0.

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats rallied from a six-run deficit to win their season opener, 10-9, over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon.

Freshman Jordan Sabol (Penn-Trafford) had two doubles and three runs scored. Senior Tanner Yard went 3 for 5 with a triple, and sophomore Zach Barberich had three RBIs.

Softball

Marist: Redshirt senior Claire Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem) is hitting .268 in 14 starts so far this season, with two home runs and four RBIs.

Morehead State: Sophomore Adeline Nicholson (Southmoreland) was leading the Eagles in batting average through nine games, at .500 (13 for 26). She had a double, home run and team-high nine RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) was 0-1 in six appearances (two starts) with nine strikeouts and 12 walks in 1313 innings.

Penn State: Sophomore pitcher Bailey Parshall (Belle Vernon) picked up her third complete-game win this season while striking out eight in a 3-1 victory over Georgia State.

Point Park: Freshman Angalee Beall (Franklin Regional) pitched a complete game and also doubled twice for the Pioneers in a 4-0 loss to Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

Robert Morris: In Wilmington, N.C., sophomore pitcher Dana Vatakis (Monessen) picked up her third win of the season, allowing fives hits and striking out seven in 9-4 win over Marist.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Mallory Halleck (Franklin Regional) went 4 for 4 with two home runs and eight RBIs for the Bearcats in a 17-9 win over Eastern in Clermont, Fla. Junior Johnna Karas (Norwin) scored three runs, and junior Shae Robson and freshman Jessica Persin (Hempfield) each tripled.

Women’s swimming

Saint Vincent: Freshman Erica Steele (Greensburg Salem) was named to the All-PAC First Team. At the conference finals, she swam for the winning 400-yard freestyle relay and finished second in the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.

Westminster: Senior Maggie Manolis (Jeannette) made the All-PAC First Team after a pair of runner-up finishes at the PAC championships in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.

Men’s swimming

Saint Vincent: Junior Zach Baum (Derry) qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.

Baum was named the PAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year after winning conference titles in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle. He qualified for nationals in the 100 fly with a time of 48.35 seconds, a school and conference record. He also will swim the 50 and 100 freestyles at nationals.

His Bearcats teammates, junior Danny Whirlow (Hempfield) and sophomore Ethan Yant, (Franklin Regional) were named to the All-PAC Second Team.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Freshman Peyton Gensler was named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Gensler had three goals and two assists in a win over New York Tech.

Women’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Freshman Kristi Kada was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week, and senior Emma Haley earned the conference’s defensive player of the week award.
