Westmoreland Campus Clippings: Latrobe's Ryan Shawley lands coaching gig
Former Latrobe star baseball player Ryan Shawley announced he has accepted a grad assistant coaching position at Keiser, a NAIA program that competes in the Sun Conference, formerly known as the Florida Sun Conference. Shawley, who just finished his senior season at Chatham, was a two-way player for the Cougars (12-23). He played first base and also pitched.
Shawley had a .302 batting average with nine RBIs and 11 runs in 26 games (25 starts). On the mound, he was 0-7 with a 5.84 ERA, 32 strikeouts and 21 walks in 44.2 innings.
At Latrobe, he was a standout pitcher who helped the Wildcats win WPIAL and PIAA Class 5A championships. When he was a senior, Latrobe finished 24-2.
Baseball
Seton Hill: For the third time in his 18 seasons, Marc Marizzaldi was named the American Baseball Coaches Association/ATEC NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year.
The Griffins finished 39-8, won their first PSAC Western Division title since 2014 and their second Atlantic Regional title and advanced to their second NCAA Division II Tourament. Marizzaldi also was named the NCBWA Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year and the PSAC West Coach of the Year.
Earlier this season, he notched his 600th career win.
Women’s basketball
Seton Hill: Head coach Mark Katarski added a graduate assistant to his staff, former Greensburg Central Catholic and West Virginia Wesleyan standout Brittany Stawovy. A senior captain last season at Wesleyan, Stawovy averaged 10.4 points and 6.8 rebounds while playing in all 17 games. The guard led the team in assists, steals and blocks.
Stawovy was a 1,000-point scorer at GCC.
Women’s golf
Seton Hill: Talon Kriebel (Derry) was named head coach of the Griffins’ program. An assistant golf professional at Glengarry Golf Links in Latrobe, he has been competing and teaching since 2015. He has played in a number of local events, including the West Penn Open.
Kriebel played football, basketball and baseball and also ran track at Derry.
Football
South Dakota State: Defensive end Jassan Eubank (Greensburg Central Catholic) plans to transfer for the third time in his collegiate career. He will have two years of eligibility left when he finds a new spot. Eubank was recruited to Edinboro out of high school, but left for Nassau Community College, where his stock rose and landed him a scholarship to South Dakota State. He played in three games in 2019.
Men’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson: The Presidents named Cody Golon as head coach. Golon previously played and coached at Seton Hill.
Golon spent the last year coaching at La Roche, which also fields a Division III program. The Redhawks went 2-2 during a shortened season.
At Seton Hill, he coached the offense when the Griffins won the GMAC regular-season title and qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
As a player, he helped Seton Hill to three postseason appearances: the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and the ECAC Tournament in 2014-15.
Golon also coached at Peters Township.
