Westmoreland campus clippings: Local trio lead Bucknell wrestling
Three Westmoreland County wrestlers helped lead Bucknell to a 39-7 win Friday over Long Island.
No. 15-ranked Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) won by pin at 165 pounds. Senior 174-pounder Mitch Hartman (Belle Vernon) won by decision, and senior Drew Phipps (Norwin) scored a major decision at 197.
Phipps has not lost a dual match since Jan. 5, 2018, at Navy, a winning streak of 16.
Iowa: Spencer Lee continues to churn out wins as he works toward another national title and even larger goals.
The Iowa junior wrestler and Franklin Regional alum captured the 125-pound title at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas.
Lee, a returning NCAA Division I champion and All-American, recorded four technical falls to reach the 57 kg finals before capping the weekend with a victory in the finals.
His victory secured a berth into the 2020 Olympic Team Trials, April 4-5 at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center.
Men’s basketball
Holy Cross: Junior guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) tied a season high with 17 points, his sixth double-figure game of the season, and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds as the Crusaders lost to Sacred Heart, 89-68. Butler is averaging 11 points and 8.3 rebounds for Holy Cross (1-11).
The 17 rebounds were the most by a Holy Cross player in more than nine years.
Long Island Brooklyn: Senior guard Julian Batts (Jeannette) scored a season-high 19 points as the Blackbirds (4-8) defeated Delaware, 82-75. He added seven assists and six rebounds. In the team’s previous game, he scored 18 points in an 89-74 loss to Rider.
Women’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Nadege Durand had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and three teammates scored in double figures — sophomore Maddie Sitler (12), senior Colleen Murphy (10) and junior Shaquoia McCray (10) but the Bobcats (4-7, 2-4) lost to La Roche (5-4, 5-0) in overtime, 73-63.
Senior forward Jenna Cole (Norwin) had eight points and five rebounds for La Roche.
Seton Hill: The Griffins moved to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West with a 102-85 victory over Shepherd. Four players scored in double figures: junior Katie Nolan (19 points, junior Courtney Cecere (16), sophomore Samantha Kosmacki (15) and junior Cheyenne Trest (14).
Nolan and Cecere grabbed eight rebounds each, and SHU made 11 3-pointers.
In an 86-82 victory over Millersville, Cecere scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers, senior Lexi Civittolo added 18 points Trest scored 16 (9 of 14 free throws).
