Westmoreland campus clippings: Mastovich earns another soccer honor
Andrew Mastovich made his mark in the Penn State Behrend men’s soccer program.
The senior defender from Franklin Regional added another postseason accolade Wednesday when he was named to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III All-Star First Team.
Mastovich, the AMCC Defensive Player of the Year, is a two-time ECAC pick. The all-region and All-AMCC player helped the AMCC champion Lions (19-2) post 10 shutouts and reach the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior guard Cam Seigfreid (Penn-Trafford) posted his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bobcats (7-1, 5-0 AMCC) to an 82-62 victory over Hilbert. Sophomore JoJo France added 15 points for UPG, which moved to 4-0 at home.
Seton Hill: Despite 29 points from senior guard Nathan Davis, the Griffins (1-5) dropped their fourth straight game, 86-80, to Lock Haven.
Shippensburg: Junior guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) is averaging 16.4 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Raiders (7-1), who are coached by Latrobe native Chris Fite. He leads the team in minutes played (34.4 per game).
Women’s basketball
Point Park: Junior guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) ranks fourth in the River States Athletic Conference in assists (4.8 apg) and is 17th in scoring at 13.5 points a game.
Seton Hill: Six players scored in double figures to lead the Griffins to a 91-77 victory over Salem. Courtney Cecere had 15 points, Sydney Rabold added 14, Katie Nolan, Samantha Kosmacki and Tina Stewart 13 apiece and Lexi Civittolo 10. The Griffins (7-1) made 15 of 36 3-pointers. Nolan grabbed nine rebounds, and Cecere had eight. rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Cecere received a unique honor, taking home the PSAC West athlete and defensive player of the week awards.
West Virginia Wesleyan: Junior Brittany Stawovy (Greensburg Central Catholic) is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points, and junior Abi Gabauer (Norwin) is third (7.6).
Wrestling
Arizona State: A pair of local redshirt seniors have helped the Sun Devils to a 5-0 start. Josh Shields, a 165-pounder, recently took second place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, and Josh Maruca (Franklin Regional) reached the Round of 16 at 149.
Ohio State: Senior 141-pounder Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) went 5-0 to win a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Pletcher, ranked No. 1 in the country in his weight division, is 14-0.
He beat three nationally ranked opponents in Las Vegas and is 7-0 against opponents ranked in the top 25.
Pitt-Johnstown: Senior Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem), the top-ranked 149-pounder in NCAA Division II, scored a pin for the fourth-ranked Mountain Cats (10-2) in a 28-13 victory over No. 10 West Liberty.
Also in the win, redshirt junior Devin Austin (Penn-Trafford), a two-time All-American, won a 12-2 major decision at 165 pounds.
Football
Bowling Green: Freshman Anthony Johnson, who spent time at Jeannette before transferring to Cleveland Heights (Ohio) for his senior year of high school, announced he plans to change colleges. Johnson said on Twitter he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal and that his “recruitment is now open.”
The 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive tackle played just three games this season and was credited for one tackle.
Johnson was a star defensive end at Jeannette when the Jayhawks won WPIAL and PIAA Class A championships in 2017. He had 134 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior.
He went on to earn second-team all-state in at Cleveland Heights.
