Westmoreland campus clippings: Norwin grad eclipses 1,000 points

It might be divided among two schools, but a milestone is a milestone to Jenna Cole.

The former Norwin basketball standout scored the 1,000th point of her college career Saturday while leading La Roche to a 64-59 win at Medaille.

Cole, a 6-foot junior forward, transferred from Pitt-Greensburg after her freshman season.

She has 615 points at La Roche and 397 at UPG, giving her 1,012 in two-plus seasons.

Cole hit a buzzer-beating shot just before halftime and had 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half.

She has 20 or more points in seven games this season for the Redhawks (7-6, 6-1 AMCC).

Men’s basketball

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore guard Cam Seigfreid (Penn-Trafford) scored a game-high 25 points and connected on four 3-pointers, but the Bobcats (4-8, 1-4 AMCC) fell to Penn State Behrend, 81-69.

Sophomore guard Matt Johnson added 15 points, and senior Kyle Bondi had eight points and seven rebounds for UPG.

Pitt-Johnstown: Senior guard Romano Sebastiani (Greensburg Central Catholic) has started all 13 games for the Mountain Cats (9-4, 4-2, PSAC) and is averaging 4.5 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. He had 13 points and four assists in 20 minutes as UPJ downed Cheyney, 99-62.

Women’s basketball

Grove City: Senior 6-foot-3 center Laura Buchanan (Norwin) had 10 points and 11 rebounds to power the Wolverines (9-5, 4-1 PAC) past Alfred, 66-56. Buchanan is providing 6.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 14 starts. Teammate Allison Podkul (Hempfield), a freshman guard, had a career-best 11 points in 17 minutes in a 74-64 victory over Geneva. Podkul, who has 13 appearances this season,came off the bench to score the team’s first seven points in the fourth quarter.

Point Park: Sophomore guard Michelle Burns (Hempfield) dished out a career-high 12 assists to help lead the Pioneers (6-11, 2-4) to a 71-68 win over Midway (Ky.) in a River States Conference East-West division game. Burns leads the team with 13.1 points per game.

Seton Hill: Graduate transfer Megan Marecic was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week after she averaged a double-double across three games for the Griffins (9-4, 3-3). She had 22 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Lock Haven, 20 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Slippery Rock, and 24 points and 15 rebounds in a loss to Edinboro.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Freshman Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) vaulted into the No. 10 spot in the national rankings after his strong showing at the Midlands Championships. Hartman, a 157-pounder, has a 13-4 record this season. He upset several nationally ranked opponents at the Midlands en route to a third-place finish.

Gannon: Sophomore 125-pounder Jacob Dunlap (Belle Vernon) was named PSAC Wrestler of the Week after he went 3-0 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Duals in Louisville, Ky. He defeated 10th-ranked Maleek Williams of Upper Iowa, 11-4. Dunlap is 12-5 this season.

Pitt-Johnstown: Junior Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem), the returning NCAA Division II champion at 141 pounds, remains the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 149 in the NCAA D-I Coaches Association Poll. Eddins is 8-0 this season.

A national runner-up in 2016, Joey Alessandro (Hempfield), a senior who transferred from Seton Hill, moved up two spots to No. 3 at 141. He also is 8-0.

Redshirt junior Devin Austin (Penn-Trafford), meanwhile, is No. 9 at 165. Austin is a two-time national qualifier.

UPJ (8-0) is ranked fourth overall.

Washington & Jefferson: Freshman 174-pounder Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) took third place at the Waynesburg Invitational, finishing 5-1. Senior Josh Armstrong (Greensburg Salem) was fifth at 141. He went 6-2, with a pin.

The Presidents tied Alma for first place in the team standings.

Datz claimed PAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Women’s indoor track & field

Navy: Sophomore Sam Orie (Hempfield) won the weight throw with a distance of 58 feet, 8 inches in an 89-83 victory at Princeton.

Honors

Case Western: Former standout swimmer Pat Rodjom (Franklin Regional) was inducted into the Case Western Athletics Hall of Fame. A former UAA Swimmer of the Year, Rodjom won conference titles in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. He placed sixth at the 2006 Division III championships to earn All-America status.
