Westmoreland campus clippings: Point Park's Burns reaches 1,000 points
Heading into Saturday’s game at Ohio Christian, Michelle Burns needed six points to reach 1,000 for her career at Point Park. Burns, a junior guard, took away the suspense in a hurry.
The Hempfield alum scored the first seven points for the Pioneers to top the milestone, but they went on to lose 84-74.
Burns is the 16th player in Point Park history to score 1,000 points.
She finished the game with 22 points and has 1,016 in 72 games.
In the game after Burns’ milestone performance, freshman forward Jordan Yaniga (Franklin Regional) had 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Point Park in a 97-60 win over Valley Forge.
Women’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: UPG (7-7, 5-4) dominated Mt. Aloysius, 78-33, as junior Nadege Durand had 18 points and eight rebounds, Shaquioa McCray had 10 points and 15 rebounds and sophomore Maddie Sitler and junior Maddy Coddington (Greensburg Central Catholic) chipped in 10 points apiece.
In an 81-56 win over Alfred State, McCray (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Durand (12, 10) had double-doubles, and senior Colleen Murphy scored 16.
Saint Vincent: Five players scored in double figures as the Bearcats (11-5, 7-0) throttled Geneva, 106-54, in a PAC game to run their winning streak to five. Seniors Kayla Slovenec and Taylor Boring had 17 points each, junior Jenna Lafko added 16, junior Madison Kollar (Latrobe) had 14 and freshman Autumn Fennell scored 11.
Lafko added eight assists and seven steals as SVC forced 31 turnovers and scored 42 points off of them. The Bearcats had 33 points in the second quarter.
Slovenec was named the PAC Player of the Week.
Men’s basketball
Shippensburg: Junior guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) had 14 points and seven assists for the Raiders in a 102-78 victory over Bloomsburg.
Westmoreland Community College: Sophomore Cam’Ron McKinney scored a career-high 33 points, including six 3-pointers, but the Wolfpack lost to CCAC, 113-98. Freshman guards Jake Biros (Greensburg Central Catholic) and Joel LoNigro (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 18 and 14, respectively. WCCC (3-15) had dropped 10 straight games.
Women’s indoor track & field
DePaul: Freshman Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) won the shot put with a throw of 14.64 meters at the Bill Clinger Classic at Grand Valley State (Mich.).
Wrestling
Bucknell: No. 18-ranked Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), Mitch Hartman (Belle Vernon) and Drew Phipps (Norwin) recorded wins — at 165, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively — as the Bison surged past Harvard, 26-12.
Ohio State: Senior Luke Pletcher (Latrobe) posted the 100th win of his college career. The nation’s top-ranked 141-pounder won by decision in the No. 4 Buckeyes’ 28-6 victory over Illinois. Pletcher (18-0) is 10-0 against top-25 opponents and has outscored them by 76 points.
Pitt: Sophomore Mickey Phillippi (Derry), ranked No. 6 in the nation at 133 pounds, secured a victory to tie the match early, but the 10th-ranked Panthers lost to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 30-10.
Women’s swimming
Cal (Pa.): Senior Karley Owens (Latrobe) won the 400-yard individual medley in 4 minutes, 48.16 seconds and the 100 backstroke (1:04.38) at the Cal Vulcan Invitational.
She also helped the 200 medley relay to a win by 3 seconds in 1:59.06.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Sara Basala was named PAC Rookie of the Week. Basala swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay and won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in a 176-103 victory over Chatham.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Kimber Randolph (Hempfield) finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:30.68) at Franciscan.
