Westmoreland campus clippings: Saint Vincent QB/WR duo among best in NCAA Division III

Saint Vincent is developing one of the top pass-and-catch combinations in NCAA Division III.

Junior quarterback Jake Phillips (Hempfield) and junior wide receiver Chris Downs were at it again Saturday in another shootout in the PAC.

The Bearcats (1-3) are flat out slinging it around.

Phillips completed 35 of 54 passes for 403 yards and five touchdowns, and Downs pulled in 13 catches for 156 yards and two scores in a 40-38 loss to Hiram.

In the last two weeks, Phillips is a brow-raising 64 of 104 for 705 yards and seven touchdowns.

Heading into Week 3, Downs was leading all Division III pass catchers in receiving yards.

Bucknell: Starting senior defensive lineman Daniel Sierk (Hempfield) had four tackles for the Bison in a 30-23 victory against Saint Francis.

Grove City: Senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) rushed for a game-high 142 yards and a touchdown, and senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn- Trafford) made a career-high 12 tackles in a 34-14 loss to Washington & Jefferson.

IUP: Redshirt sophomore receiver Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) caught 11 passes for 130 yards in a 40-13 win over Seton Hill. He leads the Crimson Hawks with 28 receptions for 383 yards.

Mercyhurst: Junior linebacker Eli Binakonsky (Hempfield) had a season-high five tackles in a 51-7 loss to No. 2 South Dakota State.

Seton Hill: A bright spot for the Griffins this season has been linebacker Ritchie McCormack.

The senior returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown in a 40-13 loss to IUP. He finished with 10 tackles, including three for loss, for his fourth double-digit tackle game of the season.

He leads the team with 49 tackles, five for loss.

Slippery Rock: Freshman defensive back Carmen Metcalfe (Penn-Trafford) had a pair of tackles and a pass breakup, but the Rock fell to Cal (Pa.), 45-38.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior defensive lineman Nathaniel Kadosh-Harris (Norwin) registered a team-high 11/2 sacks and made two tackles, and freshman linebacker Owen Sinclair (Franklin Regional) had three tackles as the Presidents downed Grove City, 34-14.

Waynesburg: Senior receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) had three receptions, two that went for touchdowns, and 75 yards in a 45-14 win over Thiel.

Men’s soccer

Cal (Pa.): Senior goalkeeper AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) was 2-2-1 in his first five matches of the season with a 1.11 goals-against average and 21 saves.

He has two shutouts.

Grove City: Junior forward Carlo Denis (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored a goal to help the Wolverines stretch their winning streak to four with a 5-1 win over Allegheny.

Senior defender Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) assisted another goal in the win.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Daniel Maddock (Norwin) scored his sixth goal of the season and assisted on another as the Bearcats blanked Thiel, 4-0.

Women’s soccer

Coastal Carolina: Sophomore goalkeeper Aris Lamanna (Franklin Regional) has not allowed a goal in back-to-back games, both 0-0 draws against South Alabama and Old Dominion.

She has five saves in those games.

Penn State Behrend: Senior goalkeeper Riley Morningstar (Norwin) was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week. She helped the Lions post a shutout against Penn State Altoona, then recorded a season-high 10 saves against Case Western Reserve.

Saint Vincent: Senior Jude Galvin, sophomore Alexis Arlaus and junior Emma Koller scored a goal each as the Bearcats tied Fransican, 3-3, in the PAC opener. The Bearcats moved to 7-1-1 with a forfeit win over Thiel.

Seton Hill: The Griffins played to a 1-1 draw against Cal (Pa.) as freshman Lauren Mealie scored a goal on an assist from senior Katie Pazdziorko.

Slippery Rock: Freshman Eden Williams (Franklin Regional) registered her first college point, an assist, in a 5-0 victory over Cal (Pa.).

Freshman Abby Paterline (Franklin Regional) scored the second goal of her career in a 2-0 win over IUP.

Women’s volleyball

Carlow: Senior outside hitter Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the USCAA Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Hess recorded the 1,000th kill of her career in a 3-0 loss to Salem.

Seton Hill: Junior Catie Flohr had 13 kills, junior Mallory Meinen added 20 assists and junior Kendyl Wagner had 15 digs to lead the Griffins (8-4) to a 3-0 sweep of Bloomsburg.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Sophomore Seth Hartman (Penn-Trafford) shot 82 to finish tied for 22nd at the Franciscan Invitational in Steubenville, Ohio.

Westminster: Freshman Aydan Gross (Mt. Pleasant) finished 31st at the Guy & Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational in Meadville. He posted rounds of 77 and 79.

Women’s golf

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Antolena Damico (Penn-Trafford) shot 84 to finish in a tie for fifth at the Franciscan Fall Invitational.

The Presidents won the event by 36 shots over Heidelberg.

Men’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Senior Brady Sundin was named the PAC Runner of the Week. Sundin finished 46th at the NCAA Division III Pre-Championships race in Spartanburg, S.C., with a time of 26 minutes, 24.4 seconds, 45 seconds better than his 8K time from the previous week.

Women’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert was named the PAC Runner of the Week. Neubert finished seventh in a field of 105 at the NCAA Division III Pre-Championship race at Spartanburg, S.C., posting a time of 22:18.7 in the 6K race.

She was the top finisher from a Mid-Atlantic Region program.
