Westmoreland campus clippings: Saint Vincent's Iuzzolino reaches 1,000 career points

Saint Vincent grad student Mike Iuzzolino scored his 1,000th career point last week in a loss to Hood.

Members of the Saint Vincent men’s basketball team want to be like Mike.

The Bearcats (3-1) came up short against undefeated Hood (6-0), but senior guard Mike Iuzzolino reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career.

Senior Dev Ostrowski made seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to lead SVC, junior Max Gordon had 19 points and 10 assists and sophomore Terek Crosby (Yough) chipped in 17 points and six rebounds in a 111-98 loss.

Iuzzolino, the 37th player in SVC men’s history to score 1,000, scored 13 points. Teammate Jaden Gales reached the milestone last season.

Men’s basketball

Geneva: Sophomore forward Austin Matthews (Yough) scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Golden Tornadoes (3-2) cruised past Postdam, 86-60.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior guard Jackson Byer pumped in a season-high 29 points and grabbed six rebounds to power UPG to an 88-74 win over Waynesburg.

The Bobcats (5-0) remained hot with a 97-71 win over Hiram as five players scored in double figures. Senior guard Trent Rozich had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Seton Hill: Junior forward Kedrick Curtis was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. He helped the Griffins to a pair of wins at the Frostburg State Bobcat Challenge. He had 22 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Frostburg State.

The Griffins earned an 88-64 victory over Davis & Elkins. Junior Dimitrios Sklavenitis had 19 points, redshirt sophomore Edir Oritz addeed 16 and freshman Rashaad Williams had 15 in the win.

The team moved to 4-0 with an 81-70 win over West Virginia Wesleyan as Curtis led five double-digit scorers with 20 points.

The Griffins host Pitt-Greensburg in a matchup of undefeated local teams at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Cam Rowell (Franklin Regional) had 10 points in a 79-75 win over No. 21 Maryville at the Great Lakes Invitational.

Westmoreland County Community College: Sophomore 6-5 center Julian Thompson (Greensburg Salem) is leading the Wolfpack (1-5) in scoring at 16.2 points per game and rebounds at 12.5 per contest.

Freshman 6-6 forward Tommy Davis (Belle Vernon) is averaging 11.3 points and 9.7 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Bethany: Junior forward Kate Botti (Norwin) has started all five games and is averaging 29.6 minutes. She leads the team in rebounding with a 6.8 average to go with 5.2 points.

Cedarville: Senior guard Brianna Zajicek (Norwin) had a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds to pace the Yellow Jackets in a 62-52 loss to Central State.

Chatham: Senior forward Alyssa Laukus (Norwin) was named the PAC Player of the Week. She scored a season-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting (7 for 7 free throws), grabbed nine rebounds and added five steals and fours assists in a 97-58 win over Pitt-Greensburg. Chatham is 5-1.

Clarion: Freshman guard Kendall Berger (Norwin) scored a career-high 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished five assists — she made 7 of 7 free throws and played a season-high 29 minutes — in a 77-57 win over Ohio Dominican.

Edinboro: Senior guard Maura Suman (Penn-Trafford) had seven points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists in a 65-50 victory over D’Youville.

Grove City: Junior forward Brooke McCoy (Hempfield) scored a career-high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting in just 15 minutes of action as Grove City downed Pitt-Greensburg, 86-49.

Senior Tiana Moracco (Derry) had 15 points and sophomore Autumn Matthews (Yough) added 14 to lead UPG.

Pitt-Johnstown: Junior forward Camille Dominick (Latrobe) had nine points and five rebounds in 17 minutes as UPJ fell to Wheeling, 62-54.

Robert Morris: Senior forward Bailey Kuhns (Greensburg Central Catholic) has started all five games and is averaging 7 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Kuhns transferred from Mercyhurst.

Saint Vincent: Senior forward Makenna Maier had 13 points, junior Danielle Pontius added 10 and sophomore Emerson Peffer pulled down 10 rebounds as the Bearcats defeated winless Mt. Aloysius, 69-53, to move to 3-2 on the season.

There is a new assistant coach with local ties on the bench this season for the Bearcats. Bill Flow, the former Jeannette girls basketball coach and Yough athletic director, is a volunteer assistant.

Flow also was the Highlands boys basketball coach for a brief time last season.

Seton Hill: Junior forward Mia Kalich was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. She averaged 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds over two games, including a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double in a win over Findlay.

Shippensburg: Freshman forward Lauren Marton (Penn-Trafford) had seven points and seven rebounds over 32 minutes in a 56-50 loss to Point Park.

For Point Park, freshman Kam Pieper (Penn-Trafford) had eight points and four rebounds going against her former teammate.

USC Upstate: Redshirt 6-foot-2 sophomore Emma Blair (Latrobe) is averaging 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 12.4 minutes a game for Upstate.

Football

Case Western Reserve: Senior tight end Jack Bryer (Belle Vernon) was named All-PAC list honorable mention.

Geneva: Senior Ryan Reitler (Greensburg Central Catholic) received All-PAC honorable mention.

Grove City: Senior offensive lineman Luke Jollie (Penn-Trafford) and senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) were named to the All-PAC second team for offense, while senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) was a second-team pick for defense.

Grove City dropped its opening NCAA Division III playoff game to Hanover, 23-15, to finish 8-3.

IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) was named to the All-PSAC West first team at wide receiver.

Whitlock had a team-record 84 receptions for 927 yards and six touchdowns for IUP, which made the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Whitlock had a career-high 13 receptions for 152 yards as IUP fell to Assumption, 23-20, in the opening round.

Millersville: Lineman Dane Levi (Belle Vernon) and defensive end Aiden Johnson (Belle Vernon) have entered the NCAA transfer portal after one season at Millersville.

Levi (6-foot-3, 295) played in six games and started four for the Marauders. Johnson played in seven games and made 10 tackles.

Penn State: Freshman linebacker Alex Tatsch (Latrobe), who is seeing increasing playing time as the season goes on, had five tackles in a 37-10 win over Nebraska.

Saint Vincent: Junior wide receiver Chris Downs was named to the All-PAC first team. Downs had 68 receptions for 1,205 yards and 17 touchdowns. He had seven 100-yard receiving games as the favorite target of junior quarterback Jake Phillips (Hempfield), who was an all-conference honorable mention along with teammates, sophomore receiver Tristan Doy, sophomore running back Julian Walker, sophomore linebacker Nathan Parker, junior defensive back Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) and junior receiver Keegan O’Brien.

Phillips passed for 2,500 yards and 23 TDs in his debut season with the Bearcats (2-8).

Seton Hill: Defensive lineman Anthony Stribling was named the PSAC West Division Freshman of the Year.

Stribling had 41 tackles, including a team-high 14 1/2 for loss, and 10 1/2 sacks.

Four Griffins made the all-conference first team: senior running back Ky’Ron Craggette, junior center Jackson Barton (Hempfield), grad defensive linemen Ben Weaver, and senior linebacker Ritchie McCormack.

Craggette ran for a team-leading 980 yards and seven touchdowns, and McCormack led the team with 107 tackles, 12 for loss.

Weaver had 49 tackles.

Second-team picks from Seton Hill (4-7) included Stribling, senior linebacker D’Kairi Boone and senior defensive back Demetri Whitehead.

Shepherd: Junior punter Daishaun Alexander (Greensburg Salem) was named to the All-PSAC East first team. Alexander started all 11 games and had a PSAC-best 44.57 average on 44 punts. He put 16 punts inside the 20-yard line, and 13 of his kicks sailed 50 or more yards.

Washington & Jefferson: Defensive lineman Nathaniel Kadosh-Harris (Norwin) was an All-PAC honorable mention selection.

Waynesburg: Senior return man and all-purpose player Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) was an All-PAC honorable mention selection.

Wrestling

Army: Senior Ethan Berginc (Jeannette/Hempfield) took second place at the Army Black Knight Invitational at 133 pounds, coming up just short of his title defense.

Berginc, a three-time NCAA qualifier, came into the season with a 76-27 record.

Brown: Freshman Eli Carr (Hempfield) finished second at 149 pounds, going 3-1 at the Army Black Knight Invitational.

Bucknell: Freeshman Ty Kapusta (Franklin Regional) is starting for the Bison in his first college season. He was 0-3 early on competing at 133 pounds.

Ohio State: Redshirt sophomore Vinny Kilkeary (Latrobe) is 11-2 with six pins and two technical falls competing at 125 pounds for the Buckeyes (6-0).

Pitt-Johnstown: Top-ranked redshirt senior heavyweight Isaiah Vance (Hempfield) pinned his opponent as the Moutain Cats blew past Ashland, 32-10.

Seton Hill: The Griffins opened the dual season with a 27-13 victory over Fairmont State. Sophomore Jacob Sombronski (125 pounds), sophomore Jacob Braun (Latrobe) at 133, sophomore Greg Shaulis (Mt. Pleasant) at 141, senior 149-pounder Ty Linsenbigler (Hempfield), grad student Mike Zacur (157) and senior 174-pounder Kane Kettering won for Seton Hill.

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats improved to 33-2 as they won the Hilbert Hammer Classic.

Men’s swimming

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Micah Lohr (Hempfield) posted a season-best time of 2:03.31in the 200-yard butterfly, junior Daniel Jeffries (Hempfield) helped the 400 relay to an eighth-place finish in 3:16.09 and senior Nathaniel Harden (Hempfield) took 13th in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.65) at the Malone Invitational.

Lohr and Harden also teamed up on the fifth-place 200 medley relay (1:36.19).

Women’s swimming

Saint Vincent: Senior Rachel Hutchinson was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week. She helped SVC to a fourth-place finish at the Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational, posting three top-five finishes.

She was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, fourth with the 400 medley relay, and fifth in the 400 IM.

Westminster: Freshman Olivia Schrock (Hempfield) helped the 400 medley relay to a second-place finish (4:30.83) in a 194-67 loss to Wooster.

Women’s volleyball

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Meegan Williams was named to the All-PAC second team. Last year’s conference newcomer of the year led SVC with 305 digs and 27 service aces.

Thiel: Junior middle hitter Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) was named to the All-PAC first team.

She finished the year with the fifth-best hitting percentage in program history at .319. She was third in the PAC in per-set blocks (1.0) and ninth in kills (2.78).

DeLattre, who has 239 career blocks, is a three-time all-conference selection.

Women’s golf

Saint Vincent: Coach Samantha Firestone was selected to attend the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in Indianapolis.

The event, which features guest speakers, work sessions and activities, is to enhance leadership development of women coaches at various levels of college athletics.

More than 2,400 coaches have graduated from the program.

Firestone was a three-time team captain and four-time All-PAC pick for SVC golf and was the PAC’s top female scholar-athlete in 2016-17. She became coach of the men’s and women’s golf teams in 2020.
