Westmoreland campus clippings: Seton Hill, Saint Vincent rookie football coaches notch victories

Casey Goff won his debut as Saint Vincent’s football coach, 28-7 over Hilbert, on Saturday.

Kevin May has been around wins at Seton Hill before having served as the football team’s defensive coordinator for six years.

Now the new head coach has a win all to himself.

So does Saint Vincent’s Casey Goff, another rookie head coach who is off and running.

May guided the Griffins to a 42-21 win at West Liberty on Saturday.

Saint Vincent and Goff took care of Hilbert, 28-7, in the season opener at Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe.

May, a Griffins alum, replaced Dan Day in June after Day, who also played at Seton Hill, resigned to pursue other opportunities.

The Griffins (1-1) put up 21 points in the third quarter to push past West Liberty.

Sophomore Boden St. Marie passed for 183 yards and three touchdowns to pace the offense, and senior Ritchie McCormack registered 11 tackles, including two for loss, and grad student Richard Johnson added 10 stops and two sacks.

Sophomore Darius Patterson had two interceptions in the win. Patterson was named the PSAC West Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

Junior quarterback Jake Phillips (Hempfield) shined in his first game with the Bearcats, completing 17 of 26 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns.

Junior Chris Downs caught six receptions for 100 yards and two TDs, and the defense was led by sophomore Nathan Parker, who rang up 18 tackles, senior Andrew Gelin, who had 10 stops, and junior Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) had nine.

Junior Jonathan Puddie had an interception for the Bearcats.

Football

Duquesne: Junior tight end Daniel Tarabrella (Penn-Trafford) scored the first receiving touchdown of his career in the Dukes’ 55-14 victory over Lincoln. The scoring play came on an 8-yard catch.

It was his second career TD. He scored on a fumble recovery against LIU as a sophomore.

Grove City: Senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) had six tackles and three QB hurries as the Wolverines downed No. 10 Cortland, 31-14.

IUP: Redshirt sophomore receiver Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) had five receptions for 45 yards, including a 20-yard grab, in the Crimson Hawks’

Women’s soccer

Clarion: Junior Alyssa Aquilio (Norwin) scored her first goal of the season in a 5-4 defeat against Ursuline.

It was the third goal of her career.

Coastal Carolina: Sophomore goalkeeper Aris Lamanna (Franklin Regional) is 2-3 in five starts and has two shutouts this season. She has surrendered five goals in 450 minutes.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman goalkeeper Kira Howcroft was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week. She did not allow a goal and made nine saves in two games. She helped to preserve a 0-0 tie against Marymount, entering the game in relief.

Pitt-Johnstown: Freshman Maddie Barrick (Mt. Pleasant) scored her first collegiate goal in the Mountain Cats’ 1-1 tie against Tiffin in the season opener.

Robert Morris: Senior captain Paloma Swankler (Norwin) scored a goal, but the Colonials fell to Bowling Green, 2-1.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore goalkeeper Rilyn Warner was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week. She notched back-to-back shutouts to open the season, combining for nine saves.

Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Rylin Bugosh (Mt. Pleasant) assisted a goal for the Presidents in a 4-1 victory over Penn State Altoona.

Bugosh had a goal in the season opener against Muskingum.

Waynesburg: Freshman Jessi Jury (Hempfield) notched an assist in the Yellow Jackets’ 8-0 victory over La Roche. She also had a goal and four assists in Waynesburg’s 15-0 win over Keystone. Jury was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week.

Men’s soccer

Cal (Pa.): Senior AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) registered five saves, and junior Jacob Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) had an assist as the Vulcans opened the season with a 3-0 win over Wheeling.

Lebanon Valley: Freshman JJ Porter (Penn-Trafford) scored the first goal of his college career as the Dutchmen blanked Lancaster Bible, 1-0, in the first game of the season.

Robert Morris: Junior midfielder Kyler Miller (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored the second goal of his college career to power the Colonials past Mount St. Mary’s, 1-0.

Miller has six career points on two goals and two assists.

Saint Vincent: Junior forward Oziel Bonola-Soriano was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week. He had three goals in the team’s first two wins, including two in a 7-0 victory over Valley Forge.

The Bearcats cruised past Penn State Beaver, 6-0, as freshman Emerson Kiss had two goals.

Freshman Daniel Maddock (Norwin) also had a goal, his second of the season, for SVC (3-1). He also has two assists.

Seton Hill: Senior midfielder Mason Fabean (Greensburg Central Catholic) and junior James Aubrey scored, and junior Jannik Reiss posted a shutout in goal as the Griffins opened with a 2-0 victory over West Liberty.

Women’s volleyball

Seton Hill: The Griffins improved to 4-0 with a 3-1 win against Goldey Beacom in the Clarion Tournament.

Junior Catie Flohr had 12 kills, senior Payton Rodberg added 11, and junior Kendyl Wagner had 15 digs.

Flohr was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.

Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony (Penn-Trafford) had nine kills and 20 digs in a five-set loss to Earlham.

Women’s golf

Bethel: Sophomore Izzy Aigner (Greensburg Central Catholic) tied for eighth and helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the LTU Collegiate Kickoff in Boyne Falls, Mich.

Aigner shot 84 and 78 for an 18-over total. The final round was canceled because of inclement weather.

Women’s tennis

Saint Vincent: Senior Carolina Walters (Latrobe) was named the PAC Player of the Week. Walters went 3-1 across two matches, playing at No. 1 singles and doubles.

Women’s cross country

Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Audra Fedor (Norwin) finished 18th out of 100 runners at the season-opening Edinboro Doug Watts Open. Her time was 19 minutes, 29.10 seconds.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert was named the PAC Runner of the Week after winning the Westminster Fisher Invite in 18 minutes, 11.66 seconds, the second-fastest 5K time in team history.

Men’s cross country

Cal (Pa.): Freshman Jacob McGee (Penn-Trafford) came in sixth at the Race in the Park at Gannon with a college debut-time of 19 minutes, 54.4 seconds.
