Westmoreland Campus Clippings: Southmoreland's Stone readies for Duquesne

Super Bowl Sunday will be a sort of homecoming for La Salle freshman basketball player Brandon Stone (Southmoreland), who will join his teammates for an Atlantic 10 game at Duquesne.

The 6-foot-11 Stone has played in 18 games, with two starts, and is averaging 3.3 points in 10.3 minutes for the Explorers (10-9, 1-6).

Men’s basketball

Grove City: Behind 18 points, six rebounds and three assists from junior guard Justice Rice (Monessen), the Wolverines (10-7, 7-2) stayed in first place in the PAC with a 68-57 win over Washington & Jefferson. Rice added 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals in an 80-58 win over Waynesburg.

Holy Cross: Junior point guard Austin Butler (Latrobe) had 14 points and six rebounds as the Crusaders brushed past Lehigh, 96-95, in overtime.

Women’s basketball

Seton Hill: Junior guard Cheyenne Trest scored her 1,000th career point during a 33-point first quarter as the Griffins (12-6, 7-6) rolled past Pitt-Johnstown, 79-65, in a PSAC West game. Trest scored a game-high 21 points, junior forward Katie Nolan had 17 and senior guard Lexi Civittolo chipped in 12.

West Virginia Wesleyan: Junior Abi Gabauer (Norwin) came off the bench and scored a game-high 18 points in a 70-56 loss to Davis & Elkins.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Senior Drew Phipps (Norwin) picked up his 20th win of the season and 80th of his career as the Bison rolled past Drexel, 27-2.

Men’s swimming

Allegheny: Senior Justin Katchur (Hempfield) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 14.80 seconds during a 148-73 senior day win against Fredonia.

Saint Vincent: Junior Zach Baum (Derry) posted victories against Westminster in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa.): Senior Karley Owens (Latrobe) finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.64 at the Western Pennsylvania Invitational hosted by Pitt.

Johns Hopkins: Junior Mikayla Bisignani (Greensburg Central Catholic) helped the 200 freestyle relay to a victory in 1:37 and the 200 medley relay to a second-place finish in wins over Swarthmore, WPI and No. 22-ranked Rowan.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Lauren Connors was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week. She won the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 individual medley against Westminster. Connors also swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Kimber Randolph (Hempfield) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke as the Presidents fell to Grove City, 130-53.

Men’s indoor track & field

Allegheny: Junior Jacob King (Latrobe) finished fourth in the weight throw (44 feet, 212 inches) at the Fighting Scots Invitational.

Women’s indoor track & field

Carlow: Junior Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) was named the River States Conference Athlete of the Week for the second straight time. She won the long and triple jumps and took third in the high jump at the Jessica Starks Open at Capital University. Her marks were 4.89 meters in the long jump, 10.87 in the triple jump and 1.49 in the high jump. In the same meet, Miller took sixth in the 60 hurdles in 10.14 seconds.

Penn State: Senior Maddie Holmberg (Hempfield) scored 4,171 points to win the pentathlon at the Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City.

Competing in five events, she won three: the 60 hurdles (8.64), shot put (43-3.25) and long jump (19-10.25). She tied for third in the high jump (5-3.25) and finished third in the 800 (2:19.37).

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Senior Jay Scerbo was named a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse.
