Westmoreland campus clippings: Strong outing for Notre Dame's Palmer Jackson
Palmer Jackson continues his rapid adaptation to the highest level of college golf.
The former Franklin Regional standout and PIAA champion completed his third top-five finish for the Notre Dame men’s golf team, posting a 9-under-par 207 to take fifth at the Augusta Haskins Award Invite in Augusta, Ga.
Notre Dame finished third at 19-under.
Jackson, a sophomore, posted his second-lowest 54-hole total, closing with a 3-under 69 that followed a 67 in the third round.
His final round included six birdies.
West Virginia: Senior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) shot a final-round 4-under 68 for his team’s low round of the tournament and finished tied for 10th at the The Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C.
Goetz ended at 3-under 213, carding rounds of 72 and 73 over 54 holes. The Mountaineers were seventh in the team standings.
Softball
Mt. Aloysius: Junior Lydia DeFazio (Penn-Trafford) is hitting .350 with three doubles and seven RBIs through six games for the Mounties (2-3-1). DeFazio was named the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year.
Otterbein: Senior first baseman Hannah Dobrinick (Penn-Trafford) is leading the Cardinals with a .431 batting average and also has four home runs, 13 RBIs and 14 runs. She went 3 for 4 in a 7-6 loss to Baldwin Wallace.
Penn: Junior center fielder Emma Nedley (Penn-Trafford) went 3 for 6 with four RBIs across two games against St. Joseph’s. She hit a three-run homer and singled in a 7-1 Penn win.
Pitt: Junior catcher Hannah Bach (Yough) had a run-scoring single, but the Panthers lost to Louisville, 6-4. Bach had started three straight games.
Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt junior Olivia Porter (Southmoreland) ripped a three-run homer and drove in five runs to lead UPJ to a 10-2 win over Mercyhurst. Senior Ali Belgiovane (Hempfield) added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Mercyhurst redshirt junior Kaitlin Hoffner (Hempfield) picked up the pitching win in relief of freshman Morgan Hilty (Penn-Trafford) as the Lakers won, 7-4. Hoffner is a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas.
Point Park: Freshman pitcher Angalee Beall (Franklin Regional) picked up her fifth win of the season, and delivered an RBI single, as the Pioneers topped Midway, 6-1. She allowed two hits and struck our four.
Robert Morris: Freshman Faith Miller (Southmoreland) continues to find her way around the collegiate game. The second baseman had four hits, doubled and scored three runs as the Colonials took a pair from Fort Wayne by scores of 5-3 and 10-9. In the second game, she went 3 for 5 with two runs.
Teammate Dana Vatakis (Monessen), a junior pitcher, struck out nine and walked two on the way to her sixth win of the season.
The Colonials continued the series against Fort Wayne with a Saturday split. Freshman pitcher Jane Garver (Ligonier Valley) allowed two earned runs and four hits, and struck out 10, over seven innings in a 4-3 in in nine innings.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats ran their winning streak to four with a two-game sweep of Thiel. Both games lasted five innings as SVC won 8-0 and 5-2.
In the first game, sophomore Jessica Persin (Hempfield), junior Kelsey Tobin (Hempfield) and senior Johnna Karas (Norwin) each had two hits and sophomore Hanna Pavsek (Hempfield) tripled. In Game 2, Persin, Karas and sophomore Mallory Halleck (Franklin Regiojal) each went 2 for 3.
