Westmoreland Campus Clippings: WCCC women's cross country wins again
This is starting to get repetitious.
But the Westmoreland County Community College women’s cross country team wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Wolfpack made it four wins in four races this fall as they captured the Lynx Invitational, hosted by Carroll Community College, in Westminster, Md.
WCCC took the first four spots in the 6K event — were separated by just 45 seconds.
Sophomore Brooke Bertovich won her fourth individual race in a time of 32 minutes, 12.58 seconds. Bertovich is the reining USTFCCAA Women’s NJCAA Division III Runner of the Week.
Sophomore Olivia Jumper (Greensburg) took second (32:32.53), freshman Anna Rubino (Irwin) third (32:40.36) and freshman Nytasha Marteny fourth (32:57.13).
WCCC is ranked No. 2 in the nation by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Wolfpack is off for three weeks and will return to competition Oct. 31 at the Region XX Meet at Hagerstown Community College.
Football
East Carolina: Junior defensive back Robert Kennedy (Jeannette) continues to see playing time for the Pirates. He had a tackle and pass breakup in a 44-24 victory Saturday over South Florida.
Kennedy, who transferred from Lackawanna College in Scranton, has nine tackles and three breakups in three games for East Carolina (1-2, 1-1 American Athletic Conference).
Women’s golf
Penn State: Senior Olivia Zambruno (Greensburg Central Catholic) was the recipient of the program’s Pam Nicholson Award given to the student-athlete “who demonstrates outstanding dedication toward improving athletic excellence.”
Zambruno did not make the travel team early in her college career but earned a starting spot as a junior and showed vast improvement.
She averaged 76.62 in seven events into the spring season before covid-19 wiped out of the rest of the schedule.
