Westmoreland County campus clippings: 4 new members to join Seton Hill Athletics Hall of Fame
The Seton Hill Athletics Hall of Fame is adding four new members.
The 2025 class includes basketball player Nate Davis, track standout Dontay Jacobs, women’s basketball coach Ferne Labati and football player Nick McGahagan.
The foursome will officially be inducted Oct. 17 at a dinner and will be recognized during the Griffins’ homecoming game Oct. 18 against Gannon at Offutt Field.
• Davis was a two-time All-PSAC selection and finished his career with 1,712 points. He ranks second in career points and field goals and holds the program marks for points (39) and 3-pointers (10) in a game.
His single-season free throw percentage mark of 92.5% is a PSAC record.
He has played professionally in Germany, Ireland, Australia and Albania.
• Jacobs was a two-time NCAA qualifier in the 400-meter dash and earned all-region honors six times. He was a two-time All-American in the 400, an event he won six times in the PSAC, including four outdoor titles.
Jacobs holds the PSAC indoor record in the 400 of 47.29 seconds.
• Labati guided the Griffins to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009-10, and its first WVIAC championship appearance in 2012-13.
She finished with a record of 117-73 in seven seasons.
• McGahagan was a three-time All-WVIAC selection and was voted the team’s top defensive player three times.
He finished with 293 tackles and holds program records for unassisted tackles.
Football
Akron: After three games, junior Joey Castle (Norwin) was fourth in punting average in the Mid-American Conference at 44.1 yards per kick.
His 68-yard kick is tops in the conference. He had four kicks of 50-or-more yards and two touchbacks.
Clarion: Redshirt freshman Ja’Tawn Williams (Latrobe) caught a touchdown pass for the second straight game as the Golden Eagles defeated Shepherd, 51-38.
Williams had three receptions for 75 yards, including a 46-yard TD grab.
IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) had five catches for 58 yards, and redshirt sophomore Noah Vogel (Norwin) had three tackles in a 70-24 win over Millersville.
The Crimson Hawks racked up 721 yards of offense.
Millersville: Freshman defensive back Aidan Allison (Hempfield) made four tackles in a 70-24 loss to IUP.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats and Geneva piled up the passing yards in their PAC matchup, which was won by the Golden Tornadoes, 55-35.
SVC junior quarterback Jake Phillips (Hempfield) completed a career-high 20 of 50 passes for 485 yards and four touchdowns, and junior wide receiver Chris Downs caught 11 receptions for 279 yards and all four scores.
Sophomore Nathan Parker tied a game-high 11 tackles and junior Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) had 10 for the Bearcats (1-2, 0-1).
Geneva quarterback Caleb Romano was 31 of 41 for 484 yards and seven touchdowns, and Keaton Baker had 12 catches for 282 yards and four TDs.
Seton Hill: Senior linebackers Ritchie McCormack and D’Kairi Boone had 11 tackles apiece but the Griffins couldn’t slow West Chester in a 34-16 loss.
The duo lead the team with 39 tackles, a total that ranks second in the PSAC.
Men’s soccer
Seton Hill: The Griffins moved to 4-1 with a 3-2 victory over Shepherd in a PSAC crossover game.
Junior James Aubrey had two goals an one assist, while senior Vasilis Christodoulou also scored.
The win followed a 3-1 victory over over District of Columbia that saw Aubrey and senior Julian Marker score for the Griffins, the latter depositing a penalty kick.
Aubrey, who hails from Hertfordshire, England, was named the PSAC West Division Athlete of the Week.
Women’s soccer
Pitt-Johnstown: Freshman Maddie Barrick already has two goals and an assist in her debut season with the Mountain Cats.
She registered a goal and an assist in a 2-2 tie against Clarion.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats continued their best start since joining NCAA Division III with their third straight win, 7-0 over La Roche.
Sophomore Lexi Graham (Norwin) led SVC (6-1) with two goals. Graham was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Robert Morris: There is a strong Westmoreland presence on the Colonials’ roster.
Local players include seniors Paloma Swankler (Norwin), Malia Kearns (Penn-Trafford) and Emerson Johngarlo (Kiski Area); junior McKenzie Pritts (Yough); and freshmen Alayna Williams (Derry) and Rease Solomon (Penn-Trafford).
Swankler is tied for the team lead with five points, on two goals and one assist.
Williams has played in eight games, Kearns seven and Pritts one.
Slippery Rock: Freshman midfielder Abby Paterline (Franklin Regional) scored her second goal of the season in a 3-1 victory over Edinboro.
After she notched an assist in a 5-0 win against Cal (Pa.), Paterline had five points for the Rock.
Men’s golf
Pitt-Greensburg: UPG entered two teams in the Hilbert Invitational, and they jockeyed for position at the top of the leaderboard.
“Team A” won the event with a score of 300, but “Team B” came in second at 322.
The Bobcats took six of the top 10 spots individually.
For A, junior Anthony Treonze and junior Ethan Rice each shot 74, and senior Zach Abdullah (Franklin Regional) and freshman Seth Tomalski (Belle Vernon) matched 76s, and Nick Thomas carded a 79.
Treonze was the individual champion thanks to a tiebreaker.
The B group was led by senior Ben Thomas (Greensburg Salem) and freshman Cody Fennell, who each shot 78.
Nine of the 14 players on the Bobcats’ roster are from Westmoreland County.
Women’s golf
Bethel: Sophomore Izzy Aigner (Greensburg Central Catholic) is headed to the NCCAA Championship with the Pilots. The team won the North Central Region Championship to advance, Aigner shot 84 and 82 in the win.
Women’s volleyball
Carlow: Senior Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) posted her 1,000th career kill in a 3-0 loss to Salem.
She had a double-double in the match with 10 kills and 16 digs.
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Meegan Williams had 15 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore Dakota Hershberger added 13 kills and 16 digs to lead SVC to a 3-0 sweep of Franciscan in the PAC opener.
Seton Hill: The Griffins defeated Clark Atlanta, 3-0, to move to 5-4 on the season.
Junior Catie Flohr led the charge with 11 kills and junior Mallory Meinen had 21 assists.
Men’s cross country
Mercyhurst: Freshman Thomas Gaydos (Norwin) was tabbed Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week after he placed sixth out of 57 runners at the Father Bede Invitational.
Gaydos added a second straight Prime Performer honor after he took second out of 35 runners at the Race in the Park in 19 minutes, 1.9 seconds.
Saint Vincent: Senior Brady Sundin was named the PAC Runner of the Week after he finished fourth at the Bethany Invitational — he was the top Division III runner — in a time of 27 minutes, 9.8 seconds.
Women’s cross country
Robert Morris: Junior Emma Jiancristoforo (Norwin) was named the Horizon League Runner of the Week.
Jiancristoforo took 13th place at the 106-runner Colonial Invitational with a time of 21 minutes, 42.5 seconds.
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert was named PAC Runner of the Week after she won her second race of the season, the Bethany Invitational, in a time of 22:32.5.
Honors
Cal (Pa.): Derry native Ed Denny will join the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class.
Denny was the Vulcans’ women’s swimming coach from 2001-19 and helped to produce 22 All-Americans. He was the program’s first coach.
Seton Hill: Sam Hartman, a 2022 graduate was selected to the PSAC 75, a list of the top male athletes to play in the NCAA Division II conference.
Hartman, a track star, was a two-time NCAA champion in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, winning both outdoor events in 2021.
The PSAC 75 coincides with the conference’s 75th anniversary.
