Westmoreland County campus clippings: Belle Vernon grad Devin Whitlock shines at receiver at IUP
When he played at Belle Vernon, Devin Whitlock was a big-play quarterback who could change the game with his arm, his legs or both.
He was the focal point of opposing defenses each week.
These days, he is making plays with his arms and hands.
A redshirt sophomore at IUP, where he transferred to after a slow-starting college career at Pitt, Whitlock has nine receptions in back-to-back games playing wide receiver for the Crimson Hawks.
He finished with nine catches for 78 yards and a touchdown Saturday in a 26-6 win over Gannon. His 1-yard TD grab late in the second quarter game gave IUP a 16-6 lead.
Whitlock leads the team with 53 receptions for 583 yards and five touchdowns.
Football
Grove City: Senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) visited the end zone a career-high four times, rushing for 37 yards, in a 56-14 win over Saint Vincent.
Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) boosted the defense with two sacks.
Lehigh: Sophomore defensive back Luke Denny (Norwin) has played in nine games for the unbeaten Mountain Hawks (9-0). He has 17 tackles and an interception.
Seton Hill: Senior linebacker Ritchie McCormack and junior linebacker Thomas Johnson combined for 21 tackles — McCormack had 11 — but the Griffins fell to Edinboro, 22-6, moving to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC heading into a bye week.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior defensive end Nathaniel Kadosh-Harris (Norwin) was named to the D3football.com Defensive Team of the Week.
Kadosh-Harris had two sacks, forced two fumbles, recovering one, and seven tackles in a 28-17 victory over Case Western Reserve.
Waynesburg: Senior Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) was named the PAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown in a 48-28 win over Bethany.
Men’s soccer
Marietta: Freshman goalkeeper Noah Walker (Franklin Regional) has started 15 games in his debut season. He is 4-10-1 with 90 saves and one shutout.
Seton Hill: Junior forward James Aubrey’s hat trick propelled the Griffins to a 3-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown. The victory clinched a spot for the Griffins (10-5-1, 6-2-1) in the PSAC tournament.
They will be the No. 2 seed from the West Division.
A native of Hertfordshire, England, Aubrey has a team-leading 10 goals and 21 points.
Women’s soccer
James Madison: Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sofia DeCerb (Latrobe) was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. DeCerb had three saves and earned her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Georgia State that gave JMU the lead in the East Division.
Saint Vincent: Junior forward Emma Koller scored with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime to lift the Bearcats to a 1-0 victory over visiting Allegheny in the PAC quarterfinals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rilyn Warner made 10 saves as SVC advanced in the tournament. It will face No. 2 Waynesburg on Wednesday in the semifinals.
Seton Hill: Junior Jess Molitoris and freshman Sage Bost scored goals as the Griffins bested Pitt-Johnstown, 2-0, to snap a 12-game winless streak.
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Rylin Bugosh (Mt. Pleasant) finished as the Presidents’ leading scorer with 18 points. She had seven goals and four assists.
Youngstown State: Redshirt sophomore Sara Felder (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored as the Penguins defeated Robert Morris, 2-0. Felder leads YSU with eight goals and 19 points.
Women’s volleyball
Seton Hill: Senior Elizabeth Kolkowski had 16 kills, freshman Haley Reed and junior Mallory Meinen had 19 and 18 assists, respectively and junior Kendyl Wagner and junior Maddie Stout notched 18 digs each in a 3-0 victory over Slippery Rock.
Seton Hill (13-9, 5-5 PSAC West) has won four straight.
Thiel: Junior middle hitter Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
DeLattre also won the award last week, only as the top defensive player. She had 25 kills, hit .384 and added eight blocks in a pair of wins for the Tomcats.
Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony (Penn-Trafford) had 10 kills and eight digs in a 3-2 loss to Grove City.
Wrestling
Lock Haven: Redshirt sophomore Lucas Kapusta (Hempfield) took third place at the Princeton Open to open the season. The 149-pounder picked up four wins, including a technical fall.
Pitt: Redshirt junior Chase Kranitz (Norwin) scored a late takedown to earn a 4-1 win at 184 pounds as the Panthers opened the season with a 20-12 victory over Navy.
At the Navy Classic that followed, redshirt junior Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant) finished second at 285 pounds, and Briar Priest (Hempfield), also a redshirt junior, was fourth at 141.
Pitt finished second in the team standings.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats share the No. 1 ranking with defending champion Washington & Jefferson in the PAC preseason coaches’ poll.
SVC was the conference runner-up last year and returns junior Chase Brandebura, a two-time PAC champion at 165 pounds. Others to watch include senior Kyle McCollum and sophomore Anthony Orlandini, senior Ryan Weinzan and sophomore Owen Caracciolo (Hempfield).
Orlandini took the 149-pound title in the B weight class, and freshman Jonah McCoy finished fourth at 285 pounds at the season-opening Mount Union Invitational.
Orlandini was named the PAC Wrestler of the Week, McCoy the newcomer of the week.
Seton Hill: Senior Ty Linsenbigler (Hempfield), a Lock Haven transfer, won the 149-pound title at the Mt. Union Invitational.
Grad student Mike Zacur took second at 157, and senior Christian Hirak (Derry) was the runner-up at 165.
Sophomore Jacob Braun (Latrobe) took third at 133.
The Griffins earned 159 points to finish second in the team standings.
Men’s golf
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats held off 19 teams to win the Lebanon Valley Fall Invitational.
UPG finished at 12-over-par 300 to win by 17 shots over Millersville.
Senior Zach Abdallah (Franklin Regional) and freshman Seth Tomalski (Belle Vernon) each shot a 2-over 74 to tie for first individually. Tomalski was the medalist in a playoff.
Junior Nicholas Thomas (Derry) and junior Anthony Treonze tied for sixth with matching 76s.
Men’s swimming
Saint Vincent: Freshman William Schauss was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. Schauss swam a leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay, and picked up wins in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.50) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.26).
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Brooke Street was named the AMCC Bowler of the Week. She made the all-tournament team at the American Heartland Bowling Association competition, posting an average of 202 in traditional play.
