Westmoreland County campus clippings: Hempfield grad Ty Linsenbigler transfers to Seton Hill

Hempfield grad Ty Linsenbigler went 16-9 with four major decisions and one pin while wrestling unattached at Lock Haven this season.

Ty Linsenbigler is coming home.

The former Hempfield standout wrestler is leaving Lock Haven to compete at Seton Hill, where he will reunite with his high school coach, Vince DeAugustine.

Wrestling unattached last season as a redshirt sophomore, Linsenbigler went 16-9 with four major decisions and one pin. He was 22-15 in his career.

At Hempfield, he had a record of 148-27 and was a four-time PIAA qualifier.

Baseball

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore Luke Treloar (Franklin Regional) earned his first collegiate win, allowing one base runner across three innings of relief, as the Vulcans (15-4) defeated Walsh, 6-4.

IUP: Freshman outfielder Elijah Dunn (Norwin) is hitting .267 with six home runs and 21 RBIs for the Crimson Hawks. He has started 34 of 35 games.

Pitt: Sophomore Jake Kendro (Norwin) cranked his fourth home run of the season — one of three the in the same inning for the Panthers — in a 7-6 win over No. 13 Virginia Tech.

Kendro’s blast sailed 411 feet.

Redshirt sophomore Phil Fox (Hempfield) worked two scoreless innings and earned his second save for the Panthers (12-12, 2-9 ACC).

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats (6-12) swept a doubleheader from Hilbert, 12-11 and 5-2, at Bobcat Park.

Sophomore Ben Aftanas (Valley) went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs in Game 1, and senior Mason Boehm and sophomore Hunter Gideons had two RBIs each.

Boehm homered, Colin Solinski went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and sophomore James Domer had two hits and two runs in the second game.

Domer also came on to earn a save in both games.

Solinski was named the AMCC Athlete of the Week.

Seton Hill: After losing to Cal (Pa.) in the first game of the series, the Griffins answered with a walk-off win in the second game.

Senior Aidan Shephard (Norwin) saved the day with a game-winning double to score Joe Alcorn for a 6-5 victory.

Freshman Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford) hit a three-run home run, and grad student Jack Oberdorf (Greensburg Salem), junior Max Mandler, junior Matt Frazetta and Haynes had two hits each.

Junior Christian Zilli (Hempfield), looking more the part in a closer’s role, earned his fourth save. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings and also picked up the win, allowing one hit.

The Griffins won the third game of the series 3-1 to move to 17-8 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West.

Mandler knocked in the winning run with a double in the seventh, sophomore Jack Whalen (Norwin) had two hits, and senior Aidan Layton pitched a complete game.

Thiel: Sophomore Aidan Ochs (Belle Vernon) went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Tomcats in a 5-3 win against La Roche.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Ethan Boring (Ligonier Valley) picked up his first save of the season in an 8-5 victory over Saint Vincent in the second game of a doubleheader sweep.

Yale: Senior Jake Williams (Franklin Regional) was hitting .274 with a home run, seven runs and four RBIs through 18 starts for the Bulldogs.

Williams took a gap year before starting his college career. He since has played in 79 games. Last year, he led the team with 42 hits, tied for second with seven doubles and had 19 RBIs.

He had a 3-for-5 game earlier this season against UMBC.

Softball

Bloomsburg: Junior pitcher Callie Sowers (Hempfield) is on the Tucci/NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Year watch list, which recognizes the top softball student-athletes in D-II.

She is one of 15 athletes represented in the Atlantic Region.

Sowers is 12-2 this season with a 0.98 ERA (0.75 WHIP) and a team-leading 115 strikeouts against just 13 walks.

She pitched a one-hitter and struck out a career-high 16, as the Huskies (17-8, 6-2) blanked Kutztown, 3-0. It was her third shutout of the season.

Freshman Josie Straigis (Latrobe) had two hits and scored a run in the win.

Sowers was named the PSAC East co-Pitcher of the Week.

Fairmont State: Junior Elizabeth Waskiewicz (Norwin) is hitting .378 and has driven in 10 runs through 23 games.

Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Mia Smith (Penn-Trafford) struck out a career high 14 and allowed five hits as the Mountain Cats won their first PSAC game of the season, 7-6 over Gannon.

Smith also had two hits, including an RBI single.

Sophomore Jenna Tallman (Latrobe) had a hit and scored a run.

Robert Morris: Redshirt sophomore Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) cracked her first career home run as the Colonials edged IUPUI, 10-9.

Saint Francis (Pa.): Senior Ashley Orischak (Hempfield) connected for a three-run home run as the Red Flash defeated LIU, 4-1.

Saint Vincent: Senior Haley Bicko pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits and striking out five, as the Bearcats blanked Bethany, 1-0.

Senior Olivia Persin (Hempfield) singled and stole second, then scored on an error in the sixth inning for the only run.

SVC is 11-7 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.

Seton Hill: The Griffins won for the fifth time in six games, splitting a PSAC West doubleheader with Gannon with a 5-0 win in the second game.

Senior Logan Hartman allowed five hits and struck out a career high 11, without a walk, in the complete-game effort.

Senior Nina Grandey had three hits, and sophomore Kassidy Wittig and sophomore Abby Smearman had two hits apiece for Seton Hill (18-8, 6-2).

Grandey and grad-student teammate Morgan Toal were named to the Tucci/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist for the nation’s top softball student-athletes in D-II.

They are among 15 players from the Atlantic Region to make the list.

Hartman was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

University of Pikeville: Grad pitcher Carolyn Alincic (Mt. Pleasant) is 4-6 in the circle with a 2.47 ERA in 10 appearances. She leads the team with 79 strikeouts and has eight complete games.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Hannah Allen (Penn-Trafford) delivered a solo home run — her second of the season — but the Presidents fell to Westminster, 9-4.

Wrestling

Buffalo: Redshirt freshman Chase Kranitz (Norwin) has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The move comes on the heels of a coaching change. John Stutzman is not returning as head coach.

Kranitz went 19-11 and finished third in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt sophomore and All-American 285-pounder Isaiah Vance (Hempfield) was named to the All-PSAC first team.

Seton Hill: Sophomore Kane Kettering was named to the All-PSAC second team, and grad student William Burgess made the third team.

Kettering won an NCAA Super Regional title at 174 pounds, qualified for nationals and had a 19-13 record.

Burgess went 26-8, taking third at regionals and advancing to the national tournament at 125.

Men’s track and field

Chatham: Junior E Kelly (Greensburg Salem) finished 11th in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9 minutes, 53.86 seconds.

Duquesne: Sophomore Joe Klanchar (Hempfield) threw the javelin a personal-best distance of 49.11 meters to take seventh at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

Westminster: Grad student Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) took third in the 200-meter dash in 22.38 seconds at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

He also helped the 400-meter relay to a fifth-place finish.

Women’s track and field

Clarion: Junior Leah Perry (Derry) finished ninth in the long jump with a distance of 4.84 meters at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

Duquesne: Freshman Cydney Blahovec (Hempfield) finished ninth in the 800-meter race at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, crossing the finish line in 2:21.29.

She also ran a leg of a third-place relay squad.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Grad student John Kerr (Derry) led the Nittany Lions with 12 kills and hit .320 in a 3-0 win over Harvard.

Kerr added 15 kills and 10 digs as PSU topped Harvard again, 3-1.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Shawn McSwiggen had 13 kills and two blocks, fifth-year Matthew Minkin registered 10 kills and six assists and sophomore Zach Wyant added 30 assists as SVC dumped Mt. Aloysius, 3-0, for an AMCC sweep.

The win secured the conference regular-season title for the Bearcats (17-7, 8-0), who will get home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Men’s golf

Cal (Pa.): Senior Aidan Bushey (Derry) shot a 7-over-par total of 151 to tie for 10th place at the Vulcan Fire Classic at Lone Pine Country Club.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Cade Patterson (Penn-Trafford) tied for ninth place at The Ruckus, a nine-team event at Williamsburg (Va.) National Golf Club.

Patterson shot a pair of 77s for a 10-over-par total of 154.

Sophomore Chase Crissman (Penn-Trafford) tied for 29th (80-88-168).

Men’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Grad student Jordan Billet recorded his 200th career points, tallying six (4 goals, 2 assists) in a 13-8 win over Franciscan.

Only five other players in program history have achieved the milestone.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) scored a goal, but W&J lost to Allegheny, 17-7. He added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers in the loss.

Women’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: Grad student Makayla Kinter was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. She helped the Griffins to a pair of wins with 12 draw controls, seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

Thiel: Freshman Makayla Flock (Greensburg Salem) scored two goals, and freshman Cassie Kaufman (Greensburg Salem) added one as the Tomcats rolled past Waynesburg, 18-1, in their PAC opener.

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent: After a 64-14 season that included a trip to the AMCC semifinals, several Bearcats and their coach received postseason accolades.

Sophomore Abby Justice was named to the All-AMCC first team, junior Sabine Strickland and freshman Skyy Nicholls made the second team and freshman Daphne Stuber, senior Jackie Koehler and senior Monique Koehler earned third-team honors.

Jeff Zidek was named the AMCC co-Coach of the Year.

SVC found its way into the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Division II/III poll, where it was ranked No. 9 at the end of the year.
