Westmoreland County campus clippings: Hempfield's Brose brothers shine for Delaware
The brothers Brose from Hempfield have helped the Delaware Blue Hens to a 3-1 start.
Braden Brose, a graduate tight end, is starting alongside his brother, senior Fintan Brose, an offensive lineman.
Braden Brose (6-3, 250) had a season-high four receptions for 66 yards in Saturday’s 29-25 win over New Hampshire. He has 11 catches for 169 yards in four games as he awaits his opportunity to get into the end zone.
For his 46-game career, Brose has 34 grabs and five touchdowns.
Fintan Brose (6-2, 304) has played in 30 career games, also appearing on defense where he has eight tackles.
He was an All-Coastal Athletic Association Third Team selection last season. Delaware trailed 18-15 going into halftime against New Hampshire before putting together a second-half rally in the rain.
Football
Allegheny: Senior wide receiver Declan O’Brien (Norwin) pulled in nine receptions for 214 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown, in a 31-20 win over Bethany.
Edinboro: While the Fighting Scots weren’t able to get around Cal (Pa.) in a 31-10 loss, the Waldier brothers spearheaded the defense at linebacker.
Junior CJ Waldier (Yough) had a game-high 12 tackles, and sophomore Tristan Waldier (Yough) added 10, with CJ recording seven solo and one for loss.
Grove City: Sophomore linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) collected nine tackles and had a pass breakup for the Wolverines in a 21-14 win over Carnegie Mellon.
Senior linebacker Cole DeFillippo (Penn-Trafford) and senior cornerback Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) each added four tackles in the victory.
Mercyhurst: Senior linebacker Dillon Ferretti (Hempfield) registered a game-high nine tackles in a 30-13 loss to IUP.
St. Francis (Pa.): Redshirt junior Aaron Tutino (Ligonier Valley) made his first career touchdown catch in a 37-34 loss to Sacred Heart.
Tutino’s grab covered 17 yards from quarterback Cole Doyle to tie it 34-34 late before Sacred Heart’s game-winning field goal by Sam Renzi.
Tutino, a 4,000-yard receiver who had 61 touchdowns in high school, had three catches for 35 yards.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior tight end Zach Cernuto (Southmoreland) and senior running back Justin Huss (Derry) each scored a rushing touchdown for the Presidents, who moved to 4-0 with a 56-14 win over Thiel.
Cernuto scored on his only carry of the day. Huss had 20 yards on five carries.
Waynesburg: Grad running back Justn Flack (Derry) ran for 78 yards, and sophomore receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) had seven receptions for 75 yards but the Yellow Jackets fell to Westminster, 31-20.
William & Mary: Senior safety Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) had five tackles in a 28-3 win over Maine that kept the Tribe unbeaten at 4-0.
Men’s soccer
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Jake Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) had a three-point game with a goal and an assist, and sophomore goalkeeper AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) earned his first career win as the Vulcans beat D’Youville, 5-1.
Grove City: Senior defender Matt Kimmich (Franklin Regional) recorded an assist, sending in a corner kick to Aiden Eck, in a 3-1 win over Franciscan.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Matt Armenio had a goal and an assist, and four other Panthers scored in a 5-1 win over Pitt-Bradford, the Bobcats’ first win in AMCC play this season.
Seton Hill: The Griffins broke a seven-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory at D’Youville.
Freshman James Aubrey scored two goals, and grant student Brice Gandhi and sophomore Nevlyn Harper had one apiece in the victory, which also saw sophomore Aidan Hollander make eight saves for the shutout.
Westminster: Junior Lucas Toohey (Mt. Pleasant) scored his third goal of the season in a 6-2 victory over La Roche.
Women’s soccer
Akron: Junior forward Lacey Bernick (Norwin) has played in seven games and has two shots, while junior midfielder Sarah Nguyen (Penn-Trafford) has appeared in four games, with two starts, for the Zips.
Florida Gulf Coast: Of her 17 shots, five have been on goal for junior Katelyn Kauffman (Norwin), who had made nine starts in 10 games.
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Maya Wertelet scored four goals and freshman Paige Inman added a hat trick to lead UPG to a 9-0 win over Pitt-Bradford.
Robert Morris: Sophomore Malia Kearns (Penn-Trafford) had the Horizon League talking Sunday. The midfielder scored a career-high four goals — a program record — as the Colonials beat Wright State, 4-2.
Kearns, whose performance also set an RMU mark with eight points in a game, was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week.
Westminster: Junior Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) assisted the game’s only goal as the Titans (7-0, 1-0) claimed a 1-0 victory over Saint Vincent in the PAC opener.
Youngstown State: Sophomore Emma Rigone (Norwin) has an assist over 10 starts, while redshirt freshman Tatum Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) has two helpers in nine games for the Penguins.
Women’s volleyball
Point Park: Sophomore Haley Stormer (Ligonier Valley) started the first nine matches of the season and played all 34 sets.
The middle hitter’s 61 kills were third in the team, and she had 28 digs and 13 blocks.
Thiel: Freshman Arin Delattre (Hempfield) had seven kills in a 3-0 loss to Geneva.
Waynesburg: Junior Jordan Stein (Norwin) matched a game-high with 27 digs for the Yellow Jackets in a 3-0 loss to Washington & Jefferson.
Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Abby Rossman was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week. Rossman eclipsed the 90-win mark for her career as she won a pair of matches, at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles, against La Roche.
