Westmoreland County campus clippings: Latrobe's DeCerb, Franklin Regional's Lamanna face off

Two of the top goalkeepers to come out of Westmoreland County in recent years played to a 1-1 draw over the weekend.

James Madison redshirt freshman Sofia DeCerb (Latrobe) went against sophomore Aris Lamanna (Franklin Regional) in the Sun Belt Conference opener, and the teams tied.

Both goalies played all 90 minutes, with Lamanna making three saves and DeCerb one.

Lamanna moved to 3-3-1 in seven games with a 1.00 goals-against average and 26 saves for Coastal Carolina (3-3-1, 0-0-1).

Decerb is 3-1-2 for the season in six starts with a 1.21 goals-against average. The Sun Belt’s top pick for preseason goalkeeper has 20 saves for JMU (4-2-3).

Football

Clarion: Redshirt freshman Ja’Tawn Williams (Latrobe) had a career-high five receptions for 71 yards in a 31-24 loss to Shippensburg.

Duquesne: Junior tight end Daniel Tarabrella (Penn-Trafford) had his second touchdown reception in as many games as the Dukes fell to Lehigh, 35-21.

For Lehigh, sophomore defensive back Luke Denny (Norwin) had three tackles, including one for loss.

Grove City: Senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) ran for 80 yards on 13 carries, but the Wolverines lost to Mount Union, 49-14.

Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) had six tackles.

IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) had a breakthrough game as the Crimson Hawks defeated Lock Haven, 42-10.

Whitlock, a Pitt transfer, had seven receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown. He pulled in a 57-yard TD pass to open the scoring.

Sacramento State: Brennan Marion (Greensburg Salem) picked up his first win as head coach of the Hornets, and it came against a team from Pennsylvania.

Sacramento State defeated Mercyhurst, a second-year Division I-FCS program that left the D-II PSAC, 49-28.

Saint Vincent: Despite pulling even with Wooster, 14-14, at halftime, the Bearcats allowed two second-half touchdowns and dropped a 28-14 decision on the road.

Junior Chris Downs had seven receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns from junior Jake Phillips (Hempfield), who finished 19 for 37 for 281 yards and two interceptions.

Sophomore Ian Tuffs (Hempfield) had four receptions for 77 yards.

Junior Devon Dean-Coles made eight tackles in the loss for SVC (1-1).

Seton Hill: The Griffins rallied to move to 2-1 with a 31-28 victory over Bloomsburg as sophomore Boden St. Marie completed 21 of 29 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 97 yards and one score.

Seton Hill rallied from a 14-3 deficit at halftime. It scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Senior linebacker Ritchie McCormack continued his strong play as he led the Griffins with 10 tackles.

Waynesburg: Senior wide receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) caught a game-high five receptions for 92 yards, including a 64-yard grab, but the Yellow Jackets fell to Dickinson, 52-19.

Wisconsin: Junior running back Cade Yacamelli (Penn-Trafford) had 21 yards on five carries in a 38-14 loss to No. 19 Alabama.

Men’s golf

Westminster: Freshman Aydan Gross (Mt. Pleasant) tied for 41st at the Saint Vincent Invitational at Latrobe Country Club.

West Virginia: Two-time WPIAL champion Nick Turowski acclimated quickly to NCAA Division I college golf, and the sophomore is one of the Mountaineers’ top players.

Turowski led WVU to a third-place finish at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.

Turowski finished fifth in the individual standings with a 3-under-par 210 after rounds of 74, 66 and 70.

It was his second top-five finish in as many weeks after he took third at the Island Resort Collegiate Open.

WVU finished the Gopher Invitational at 9-over 861.

Women’s golf

Seton Hill: Sophomore Ali Boyle (Franklin Regional) shot a 74 to lead the Griffins to a third-place finish at the Susquehanna Invitational.

Women’s soccer

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Maya Wertelet headed in a goal off an assist from freshman Sydney Hares as UPG edged Waynesburg, 1-0, to move to 2-2-1.

Saint Vincent: For the first time, the Bearcats are listed in the United Soccer Coaches Region VII rankings.

SVC checked in at No. 8 in the first poll of the season.

Junior Addie Fisher and sophomore Lexi Graham (Norwin) scored for the Bearcats (5-1) in a 2-0 win over Wilmington over the weekend.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rilyn Warner was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week. Warner went 2-0 with two shutouts.

Men’s soccer

Cal (Pa.): Junior midfielder Jake Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) has started both games for the Vulcans and has one assist.

Grove City: Senior defender Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) delivered his first assist of the season as the Wolverines defeated Buffalo State, 1-0.

Penn State Behrend: Sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Scalise (Norwin) was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week. Scalise made nine saves across two games and posted a 1-0 shutout over Grove City.

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Nick Stuck and freshman Landon Barcus scored goals to propel the Bobcats (2-2-2) to a 2-1 win over Muskingum.

Saint Vincent: Junior defender Logan Kremposky scored the game’e only goal in the 61st minute as the Bearcats edged Penn College, 1-0. SVC’s 6-1 start is its best since the program joined NCAA Division III.

Junior midfielder Cameron Mulvanny was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week, and senior goalkeeper Kameron Rock was tabbed the conference’s defensive player of the week.

Mulvanny had a goal and two assists in two games, including the go-ahead score in a 2-1 win over Penn State Altoona.

Rock had 12 saves and allowed one goal during a 2-0 week.

Women’s volleyball

Carlow: Senior outside hitter Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the USCAA Division I Player of the Week. She had 98 kills and 101 digs over seven matches for the Celtics.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Lily Show was named to the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic all-tournament team. UPG finished 0-3 at the event played at Wooster (Ohio).

Men’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Senior Brady Sundin helped the Bearcats place second at the Bethany College Invitational. He finished fourth with a time of 27 minutes, 9.8 seconds.

Women’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert won her second race of the season, crossing the finish line in 22 minutes, 32.5 seconds at the Bethany College Invitational.

Women’s basketball

Saint Vincent: Ashley Campbell was hired as an assistant to new head coach Kam Gissendanner.

A Bearcats alum, Campbell was an assistant at SVC for 10 years under Jimmy Petruska.

She started 52 games in her college career at point guard.

Swimming

Saint Vincent: Men’s and women’s coach Josh Gurekovich was named assistant athletic director for leadership.

He will continue to coach both teams.

Gurekovich has been coach since 2004 when the swimming programs started. He was the women’s PAC Coach of the Year in 2013.
