At the end of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference softball season it was time to pay the Piper.
Westminster pitcher Cheyenne Piper had a breakthrough freshman season and as a result won two major awards from the conference
The Ligonier Valley alum was named pitcher and newcomer of the year for her hello-world run that saw her lead the Titans (28-13) to a PAC title and the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Piper, who also was named to the All-PAC first team, is just the second player to win both awards in the same season.
She added another accolade when she was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Region VII first team.
Piper finished 17-6 with a 1.71 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 147 innings. The right-hander’s nine shutouts are a school record.
Softball
Geneva: Junior pitcher McKenzie Rapp (Penn-Trafford) was named to the All-PAC second team.
Rapp finished 15-6 with a career-low 2.26 ERA over 111 2/3 innings.
Marist: Grad pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) set a program single-season record with her 23rd win of the season as the Red Foxes (48-8-1) defeated Saint Francis, 8-0, in six innings in the NCAA Tournament.
Myers gave up four hits, struck out four and walked one in the victory as she improved to 23-1.
Penn State: Senior outfielder Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast All-Region third team.
Brunson had a career season, batting. 345 with a team-high-tying 13 home runs, 49 RBIs and a 1.049 OPS for the Nittany Lions (25-27).
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats will remember this season.
They collected a number of firsts on the way to a banner year. After a slow start, UPG finished 21-19, posting the most wins in school history, while winning their first AMCC title and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time.
Robert Morris: Redshirt junior Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) set a program single-season record with her 45th run as the Colonials finished 30-18, winning the Horizon League title before going 0-2 in the NCAA Regional.
Poulich finished with a .336 average, a team-high 16 home runs and 53 RBIs during her career season. The RBIs also are a record.
Senior Jess Matheny (Southmoreland) hit a three-run homer in an 11-3 loss to Auburn, after she doubled and tripled in a 10-1 loss against Florida State.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Josey Michalski (Norwin) and sophomore Alyssa Henderson were named to the All-PAC first team.
Freshman Eva Farone and sophomore Mackenzie Favero were honorable mention selections.
Michalski also pulled in National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region third team honors after she led the Bearcats with 42 hits and 36 RBIs and batted .396. She also scored 29 runs.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior shortstop Hannah Allen (Penn-Trafford) was named to the All-PAC first team.
Allen led the Presidents in batting average (.459), home runs (3), RBIs (28), slugging (.725) and on-base percentage (.487).
Baseball
Cal (Pa.): Junior closer Jake Kramer (Hempfield) was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Region first team after another strong season out of the bullpen.
Kramer broke his own single-season program record for saves with 11 while setting the PSAC record with 27 saves.
He finished the season with a 4-1 record and 35 strikeouts in 39 innings.
Pitt: Junior Jake Kendro (Norwin) had his second multi-hit game of the season as the Panthers fell to No. 15 Clemson, 13-6.
One hit was an opposite-field solo home run, his second blast of the season.
Saint Vincent: Senior catcher Derek Hald (Kiski Area) was named to the All-PAC second team, while senior pitcher Alex Polito and grad pitcher Jeremy Kreuwieser made the honorable mention list.
Hald led SVC with 47 hits, including eight doubles, and had 24 RBIs. He threw out 24 potential base-stealers.
Seton Hill: Redshirt junior pitcher Ian Korn was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and joined grad pitcher Jon McCullough and sophomore shortstop Owen Henne on the all-region first team.
Sophomore pitcher Zach Herb was named to the second team.
Korn, also the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year, was 11-1 with a 1.51 ERA in 77 1/3 innings.
McCullough was 8-3 with a 2.05 ERA and struck out 56 in 74 2/3 innings, while Henne was leading the team with a .365 batting average and 48 RBIs.
Herb has a team-leading seven saves.
For the third straight season, the Griffins (40-16) advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regional. They won the Atlantic Regional by defeating Millersville two games to one in a best-of-three series.
They won two games on Saturday, 7-4 and 8-2.
Seton Hill has made the Atlantic Region final five times since 2018.
Yale: Senior Jake Williams (Franklin Regional) was named to the All-Ivy League second team. Williams was hitting .333 with three home runs and 37 RBIs for the Bulldogs, who were two games into the conference tournament.
Administrative
Pitt-Greensburg: Athletic director Jeromy Yetter is set to take over as commissioner of the NCAA Division III Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The move takes effect July 1.
Yetter, who has been UPG’s AD since 2018, also has a coaching background. He previously served as the Bobcats’ men’s basketball coach and was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Navy.
“The AMCC has always meant a lot to me and I look forward to working with each of our members to continue to build upon our successes,” Yetter said.
Yetter will replace Donna Ledwin, who was the league’s first commissioner and held the position since 2002.
Women’s track and field
Michigan: Sophomore Liz Tapper (Hempfield) set a program record in the shot put with a throw of 17.65 meters, breaking her own mark of 17.27, at the Big Ten Championships.
Tapper earned All-Big Ten second team recognition.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Grace Neubert broke another program record while taking third place in the 5K at the AARTFC Championships in Massachusetts. Neubert finished the race in 17 minutes, 26.06 seconds.
Seton Hill: Senior Haley Brenny qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships May 22-24 in Pueblo, Colo.
She will compete in the 400-meter dash.
Waynesburg: Senior Megan Barry (Norwin) placed ninth at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet in the javelin with a throw of 34.75 meters.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Grad student Skylar Orlowski and junior Mia Udovcic were named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region first team.
Senior Giovonna Spadafora made the second team.
Men’s golf
West Virginia: Freshman Nick Turowski (Penn-Trafford) tied for 28th at the Golfweek National Invitational Championship at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. He carded rounds of 71, 71 and 73 for a 3-over total of 219.
Men’s tennis
Saint Vincent: Senior singles players senior Brian Lee (Penn-Trafford), senior Jack Citrone and sophomore Braden Yokopenic were named to the All-PAC second team.
Yokopenic and Lee also made the second team in doubles.
