Westmoreland County campus clippings: Longtime coach Tom Harbert to be honored at Saint Vincent
The Saint Vincent wrestling program will honor one of its greats Tuesday night before the season opener against visiting Shippensburg.
The man of the hour will be Tom Harbert, the head wrestling, lacrosse and cross country coach at SVC for over 50 years and a advocate for bringing wrestling back to the college after more than 40 years away.
Harbert, 82, guided the wrestling team from 1963-71 and is a member of the National Wrestling, Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling, Pennsylvania Sports and SVC athletics halls of fame.
A Bearcats alum and former wrestler, Harbert also coached the wrestling team at Latrobe where he won 202 dual meets in 20-plus seasons.
The Wilkinsburg native retired in 2015.
There will be a pre-match reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Carey Center lounge.
Football
Grove City: Junior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) had a team-high seven tackles, one for loss, and junior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) ran for 60 yards and a touchdown as Grove City (8-1, 8-1 PAC) defeated Case Western Reserve, 30-20.
Mercyhurst: Grad student Dillon Ferretti (Hempfield) and sophomore Eli Binakonsky (Hempfield) combined for eight tackles, and Ferretti had a sack, as the Lakers routed Lincoln, 66-0, to snap a three-game losing streak.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior tight end Zac Cernuto (Southmoreland) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, a national honor.
Cernuto had a career day against Case Western Reserve, catching 14 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Seven of his receptions went for first downs.
William & Mary: Senior safety Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) has an interception in three straight games for the Tribe, and ranks 13th nationally in picks.
Men’s soccer
Grove City: Grad defender Connor Hudson (Franklin Regional) scored his second goal of the season, but the Wolverines bowed out of the PAC Tournament with a 2-1 loss to No. 1 seed Franciscan.
Penn State Behrend: Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Scalise (Norwin) registered his first college playoff win, making three saves in a 2-1 win over Mt Aloysius in the AMCC semifinals.
Scalise was a big reason Norwin won its first WPIAL championship last season.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (10-4-3) moved into the 12 spot in the NCAA Super Region I rankings.
The top 10 teams make the NCAA Tournament.
Women’s soccer
James Madison: Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sofia DeCerb (Latrobe) made six saves for a shutout as JMU blanked Old Dominion, 1-0, in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals. She made three important stops in the championship game, also won by the Dukes, 3-2, against No. 3 Texas State.
DeCerb was named to the all-tournament team.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Sarah Tonkovich scored the tying goal before junior Maya Wertelet delivered the go-ahead score in the 80th minute as UPG rallied past Penn State Altoona, 2-1, in the AMCC semifinals.
The Bobcats lost to Penn State Behrend in the finals.
Tonkovich, Wertelet and senior Julia Rowe were named to the AMCC All-Tournament Team.
Saint Vincent: A historic season came to an end for the Bearcats with a 1-0 loss to Westminster in the PAC semifinals.
SVC finished with a record of 13-6-1, the wins marking the most in program history in a season.
Grad student Tanisha Grewal tied Julie Gongaware (Jeannette) for the most career points by an SVC player, finishing with 120.
Grewal and junior Jude Galvin were named to the PAC All-Tournament Team.
Grewal finished with 54 career goals.
Westminster: Senior midfielder Natalie Vilchek (Yough) scored the game-winning goal with just under six minutes remaining as the Titans edged Saint Vincent, 1-0, in the PAC semifinals at UPMC Sports Complex in New Wilmington.
Vilchek added two goals, one off a corner kick, and senior Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) assisted on another score, but Grove City beat the Titans, 4-3, to take the PAC championship for the second year in a row.
Men’s cross country
Pitt-Greensburg: Dylan Ackerman finished ninth at the AMCC Championships to earn all-conference recognition.
Ackerman will run in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 16 at Lock Haven.
Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (14-11) earned the No. 2 seed in the PAC Tournament. They get a first-round bye and will host the winner between Chatham and Thiel on Thursday night.
Senior libero Stacie Ramos was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Waynesburg: Senior Jordan Stein (Norwin) had 20 digs in a 3-0 loss to Saint Vincent in the final match of the regular season.
Men’s swimming
Clarion: Sophomore Henry Miller (Southmoreland) and senior Austin Prokopec (Penn-Trafford) teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay race in 1 minute, 34.1 seconds in a 118-86 loss to Bloomsburg.
Women’s swimming
Chatham: Freshman Hannah Uhrinek (Hempfield) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. She collected three individual wins against Washington & Jefferson, finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. Her time of 57.61 seconds in the 100 free ranks second in the conference this season. She already owns the top mark in the 200 fly.
Penn State Behrend: Sophomore Camryn Watters (Hempfield) was named the AMCC Swimmer of the Week. Watters set the pool record at Pitt-Bradford with a winning time of 2 minutes, 11.92 seconds in the 200-yard backstroke
She also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay, which also set a pool record with a time of 1:54.57.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: Senior Sabine Strickland was named the AMCC Bowler of the Week. She posted a four-game average of 203 at the Niagara Invitational, which included a career-high 243 in a 981-908 win over D’Youville.
SVC finished fourth overall, behind three Division I programs.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Michael Bigley had 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in his 39-minute debut with the Bobcats, who held back Grove City, 78-76, to take the season opener in overtime.
Junior Matthew Marinchak (Ligonier Valley) added 17 points, while junior Joziah Wyat-Taylor had 15, and sophomore Trent Rozich added 11 and five steals.
Saint Vincent: Junior Dev Ostrowski scored a game-high 18 points, senior Mike Iuzzolino added 13, freshman Matthew Puodziukaitis had 11, and grad student Osyon Jones chipped in 10 as SVC opened the season with an 86-68 victory over Carlow.
SVC had 22 players see playing time.
Freshman Terek Crosby (Yough) had nine points off the bench for the Bearcats.
Senior Riley Comforti (Southmoreland) led Carlow with 15.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Kedrick Curtis had 16 points, and junior James Rice and sophomore Dimitri Sklavenitis added 13 apiece as the Griffins defeated Frostburg State, 85-46, to move to 2-0.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny: Freshman Ava Kobus (Norwin) played 30 minutes off the bench in the Gators’ season opener. She had six points and three steals.
Edinboro: Junior guard Maura Suman (Penn-Trafford) had 10 points, four assists and three steals as the Fighting Scots opened with a 78-62 victory over Wheeling.
Grove City: Senior Mara Polczynski (Norwin) had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals over 24 minutes as the Wolverines tipped off with an 89-55 loss to John Carroll.
Harvard: Freshman guard Alayna Rocco (North Catholic/Trafford) knocked down a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to force overtime on the road at Indiana. Harvard went on to win 72-68 to move to 2-0. Rocco has played 39 minutes off the bench so far, and has 13 points.
Holy Family: Freshman forward Lauren Palangio (Norwin), last year’s TribLive Westmoreland player of the year, contributed five points, two rebounds and two assists in her college debut, a 71-51 loss to District of Columbia.
Mercyhurst: Junior forward Bailey Kuhns (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 20 points over 32 minutes in the Lakers’ opening game at Notre Dame, a 105-61 loss.
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Sarah Penrod (Franklin Regional) scored a career-high 20 points and added seven rebounds off the bench, but the Bobcats lost their season opener to Waynesburg, 96-64.
Senior Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) had 13 points, junior Tiana Moracco (Derry) added 12, and freshman Kaylee Charles had 10 in the loss.
The game marked the first game for new UPG coach Julie Bolden.
Seton Hill: Behind 19 points from junior Helene Cowan, and 14 from grad student Christiane Frye, the Griffins began the season with a 77-73 win over No. 7 Fairmont State at Lock Haven’s PSAC/MC Challenge in Maryland.
The Griffins then came within seven points of the school single-game scoring record in a 120-77 win over Concord in the same event.
Five players scored in double figures, led by Frye, who had 22. Junior guard Hallie Cowan scored 19, freshman Shaye Bailey added 17, Helene Cowan 16, and sophomore Mia Kalich 15.
Kalich pulled down 18 rebounds and added seven assists.
Freshman Anna Rafferty (Latrobe) added nine points off the bench.
The school record was set in 2018-19 when the Griffins defeated visiting West Virginia State, 127-99, and made 17 3-pointers.
Westminster: Freshman guard Angelina Brush (Franklin Regional) scored eight points in a 79-41 loss to Mount Union in the Teammates For Life Tipoff Tournament.
Wrestling
Army: Junior Ethan Berginc (Jeannette/Hempfield) pinned TK Davis of Gardner-Webb in 2:25 at the Throwdown on the Yorktown.
The unique event was contested at sea on the deck of the USS Yorktown.
Army won the dual, 35-6.
Bucknell: Fifth-year 133-pounder Kurt Phipps (Norwin) won a 17-0 major decision in 3 minutes as the Bison stomped Morgan State, 35-8.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Christian McChesney (Greensburg Salem) finished fourth at 285 pounds at the 17th W&J Invitational.
After a pin and a major decision over Fairmont State freshman Aidan Pham (Norwin), McChesney forfeited his final two matches.
Field hockey
Shippensburg: Tara Zollinger (Hempfield) was namd the PSAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her rewarding time as the Raiders’ coach.
The eighth-year coach has over 100 wins and has won three NCAA Division II national titles. Her teams are 9-1 in the NCAA postseason.
Honors
Carnegie Mellon: Two men with Penn-Trafford roots were inducted into the Carnegie Mellon Athletics Hall of Fame.
Rob Cortazzo and Dave Richards were members of the 1983 football team that received induction.
Cortazzo was a second-team All-PAC lineman.
The ‘83 Tartans went 9-0 with six shutouts during the regular season and went to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Their school record of 58 first downs in a season remains intact. They only gave up three touchdown passes all season under legendary coach Chuck Klausing.
