Penn-Trafford grad David Newsom competes for Saint Vincent's golf team during the 2025 season.

With sophomore David Newsom out in front as the medalist, the Saint Vincent men’s golf team won the Grove City Invitational at Grove City Country Club.

Newsom, a Penn-Trafford graduate, shot 3-under-par 69 to win the individual title by two shots. The lefty finished with six birdies and carded a 4-under 32 in the front side.

SVC shot even-par 288, holding off Washington & Jefferson by four shots.

SVC had three players finish tied for fourth at even-par 72: junior Matt Edwards, sophomore Logan Clark (Norwin) and junior Owen Dzurko (Hempfield).

Football

IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) had three receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown as the Crimson Hawks dumped Edinboro, 35-12.

Seton Hill: The Griffins shook up the PSAC West with a Week 6 stunner.

They used a 10-point fourth quarter and staunch defense to knock off No. 6 Cal (Pa.) as senior running back Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 155 yards and a touchdown and freshman Darrian Carter, who started at quarterback, added 97 yards and a score.

Freshman Rayyan Bataineh made a 32-yard field goal with 8 minutes, 49 seconds left in the fourth quarter before Craggette broke loose for a 48-yard TD with 2:22 remaining.

Junior Thomas Johnson led the defense with 10 tackles. Ben Weaver had two sacks, and sophomore Darius Patterson intercepted a pass for the Griffins (3-3, 1-1).

Craggette was named the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week.

Slippery Rock: Redshirt freshman defensive back Carmen Metcalfe (Penn-Trafford) had a season-high six tackles in a 38-35 loss to Gannon.

Temple: Junior Conlan Greene (Penn-Trafford) had a sack for the Owls in a 27-21 victory over Texas San Antonio.

Greene also is a long snapper.

Washington & Jefferson: Freshman linebacker Owen Sinclair (Franklin Regional) registered 11/2 sacks in a 70-13 rout of Hiram. He also blocked a punt for the second time this season, which was returned for the Presidents’ first touchdown of the game.

Men’s soccer

Cal (Pa.): Jake Gretz (Greensburg Central Catholic) has a goal and an assist this season for the Vulcans. The junior midfielder netted a goal in a 3-2 loss to Pitt-Johnstown.

Grove City: Four local players are contributing this season for the Wolverines.

Junior forward Carlo Denis (Greensburg Central Catholic) has two goals in nine starts, fifth-year midfielder Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) has two assists in 10 games and junior Jake Kimmich (Franklin Regional) and junior Colton Hudson (Franklin Regional) also are key starters on the back line.

Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Lucas Pittman scored a pair of goals in the first half, and sophomore Cam Loveland added a goal and an assist as the Bobcats defeated Penn State Altoona, 3-0.

Junior Nick Bruan earned the clean sheet, recording five saves.

Sophomore defender Arlo McIntyre was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week.

UPG won its first two conference games, and he played all 180 minutes, helping to hold Pitt-Bradford to three shots and leading the shutout of Penn State Altoona.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Daniel Maddock (Norwin) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. Maddock scored the winning goal in the Bearcats’ 2-1 win at Hiram. He has 17 points and seven goals to lead the team.

Seton Hill: Junior James Aubrey, sophomore Rowan Aisenbrey and sophomore Esteban Moreira all scored and freshman Felix Knorn had two assists in a 3-1 win over Slippery Rock.

Women’s soccer

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore defender Dionna Santia was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week. She helped the Bobcats to a 1-0-1 week, contributing an assist and aiding a defense that allowed only five shots.

Pitt-Johnstown: Freshman forward Maddie Barrick (Mt. Pleasant) scored both goals as UPJ defeated Seton Hill, 2-1, in PSAC West action.

She has quickly warmed up to college soccer.

In seven games, Barrick had a team-high nine points on four goals and one assist.

Saint Francis: Freshman Riley Kerr (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week and a conference top performer. Kerr, who earned player of the week honors for the second time this season, had goals in back-to-back games against LIU and Delaware State.

Through 11 games, Kerr had four goals to lead the team.

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats improved to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the PAC with a 5-0 victory against Bethany.

Junior Addie Fisher and junior Emma Koller each scored two goals, while junior Jordan Kirkwood (Valley) added a goal and an assist in the win.

Sophomore Rylin Warner earned the shutout in goal. Warner was named the PAC Goalkeeper of the Week.

Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Rylin Bugosh (Mt. Pleasant) had a season-best two goals as the Presidents secured a 2-2 tie against Waynesburg. Bugosh has three goals and an assist in 11 games for the Presidents.

Women’s golf

Bethel: Sophomore Izzy Aigner (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the Crossroads League Golfer of the Week after a runner-up finish at the Battle at Blackthorn in South Bend, Ind. She posted rounds of 74 and 76 but lost a sudden-death playoff.

Bethel won the tournament with a school-record score of 297.

Washington & Jefferson: At 36-over par for 54 holes, sophomore Antolena Damico (Penn-Trafford) finished tied for 23rd at the Beaver Fall Classic in Bluffton, Ohio.

Men’s golf

Geneva: Junior Ryan Edwards (Norwin) shot a 79 to finish third at the Waynesburg Fall Invitational.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats finished second at the Stateline Shootout in Hamilton, Ohio, with a score of 30-over-par, 15 behind Shenandoah.

Junior Anthony Treonze was the team’s top individual finisher, placing tied for eighth at 4-over (74-74).

UPG has two wins and two runner-up finishes this season.

Women’s volleyball

Carlow: Senior outside hitter Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Specialist of the Week.

Hess had 13 kills, 32 digs and five blocks across a pair of matches at Houghton.

Pitt-Greensburg: UPG snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Penn State Beaver as the Bobcats posted a season-best .313 attack percentage.

Junior Mia Stohon had 15 kills, sophomore Ca’Mari Walden hit .625, and freshman Lily Buckles had 17 assists and nine digs.

Saint Vincent: Sophomore outside hitter Meegan Williams had a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, and freshman setter Bailey Green followed suit with 31 assists and 11 digs as the Bearcats swept Bethany, 3-0.

Thiel: Junior Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) had a team-high 11 kills on a career-best .556 percentage in a 3-0 victory over Saint Vincent.

Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony (Penn-Trafford) had 15 digs and five kills as the Titans picked up a 3-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson.

Men’s tennis

Saint Vincent: Coach Brian Niemiec picked up his 150th career win as the Bearcats defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 7-0.

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent College: Defending champion Saint Vincent is ranked No. 1 in the AMCC preseason poll.

The Bearcats, led by AMCC coach of the year Jeff Zidek, are coming off their first conference title and first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Top players returning are junior Skyy Nicholls and sophomore Mareana Pilyih.

Nicholls was an All-AMCC first team pick who averaged 186.7 and carried a strike percentage of 46.7. Pilyih was the NCBCA and NTCA rookie of the year, averaging 191.3 with a 40.7 strike percentage. She made 84.9% of her makeable spares, including 90.7 of single pins.

The season starts Oct. 11 at the Grapevine Classic in Erie.

Honors

Penn State Behrend: Dan Simon (Penn-Trafford) was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

Simon, who swam for the Lions from 2011-15, was the first Behrend swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. He was a three-time AMCC swimmer of the year and a three-time All-American honorable mention.

As a senior, he placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke at the national meet.

He won 21 AMCC titles.

Softball

Seton Hill: New head coach Mandy Sansbury added an assistant to her staff in Tessa Gage.

Gage coached one season at Shenandoah, where she worked with pitchers and also served as recruiting coordinator. She also spent a year at Lake Erie College.

A former player at Rochester Christian, where she was a two-year captain, Gage also has travel ball coaching experience and also coached at the high school level at Walled Lake Western (Mich.), her alma mater.
