Westmoreland County campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg's Domer, Burkey earn AMCC honors
The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team piled up some serious postseason hardware after a memorable season.
Junior outfielder James Domer was named the AMCC Player of the Year, and sophomore Conner Burkey (Hempfield) grabbed AMCC Pitcher of the Year honors.
Junior Tommy Smith joined Domer on the D3Baseball.com All-Region First Team, Domer made the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Region first team and Smith made the second team.
Domer added a D3Baseball.com All-American third-team nod, and was tabbed an ABCA/Rawlings All-American.
Domer, who also was named to the All-AMCC first team, hit .496 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBIs for UPG (16-19).
Burkey was the staff ace, going 8-1 with 1 2.86 ERA, 61 strikeouts and 16 walks in 69 1/3 innings.
Smith hit .432 with 60 hits, seven homers, a team-high 45 RBIs and 28 runs.
UPG won the most games in the program since 2019.
Cal (Pa.): Junior relief pitcher Jacob Kramer (Hempfield) was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first team.
Kramer is one of two players in program history to be a consensus first-team all-region selection in back-to-back years.
He broke the single-season school record and PSAC record for saves in a season with 27, including 11 this season. He was 4-1 in 39 innings.
Seton Hill: Redshirt junior Ian Korn, already lauded by several other outlets, was named the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Ron Lenz Pitcher of the Year.
Korn also was tabbed a D2CCA All-American.
He finished 11-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 83 and walking 17 in 84 1/3 innings.
Korn also made the ABCA/Rawlings All-Atlantic Region first team, joining two teammates — sophomore designated hitter Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford) and grad pitcher Jon McCullough.
Junior Jack Whalen (Norwin) and sophomore Zach Herb made the second team.
Korn also was named to the ABCA All-American first team for a third time.
Haynes smacked 12 homers and drove in 40, and McCullough went 9-3 with a 2.42 ERA and 65 K’s in a staff-high 85 2/3 innings.
Softball
Geneva: Junior pitcher McKenzie Rapp (Penn-Trafford) was named to the National Christian College Athletic Association All-America second team.
Rapp helped Geneva advance to its second consecutive NCCAA World Series and back-to-back 30-win seasons. She was 16-6 with a 2.44 ERA and four saves. She tied the program record with her 15th career save.
Seton Hill: Coach Cassie Moore announced on X she is retiring from coaching to “explore other opportunities.”
She was coach of the Griffins for three seasons and finished 95-51, including 29-17 this season.
Seton Hill went 37-17 last season (23-9 PSAC West) and 29-17 in her first year.
Before she came to Seton Hill, she was coach at Bethany for four years.
Westminster: Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Piper (Ligonier Valley) received a lofty honor as she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Pitcher of the Year.
Piper had a breakthrough season, also earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-Region honors as well as Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Piper went 17-6 with a 1.71 ERA and a school-record nine shutouts, 168 strikeouts and a 1.71 ERA in 147 innings.
Women’s track and field
Michigan: Sophomore Liz Tapper (Hempfield) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with a throw of 17.28 meters at the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville, Fla.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Seniors Skylar Orlowski and Grace Angello were chosen to play in the Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games May 31 at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Orlowski, a two-time IWLCA All-American, scored 67 goals and handed out 37 assists for a team-high 104 points while on the attack this season.
Angello, also an attacker, had 57 goals and 23 assists for 80 points.
Men’s golf
Pitt-Johnstown: Senior Mario Battaglia (Latrobe) was named to the All-PSAC second team.
Football
Michigan: Former defensive lineman Anthony Johnson (Jeannette), who played at several college programs, accepted a position on the Wolverines’ recruiting staff.
He is leaving Pitt, where he worked in a similar role.
Shepherd: Sophomore punter Daishaun Alexander (Greensburg Salem) will continue his playing career at Shepherd, an NCAA Division II program in Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Alexander transferred from Saint Vincent, where last season he had 58 punts for 1,978 yards with a long of 65 yards.
