Westmoreland County campus clippings: Saint Vincent's Daniel Maddock makes fast impact
Saint Vincent men’s soccer is on the upswing and a lot of the team’s success has to do with the play of freshman forward Daniel Maddock.
Looking polished and prepared for NCAA Division III soccer, Maddock has surged to the team’s points lead.
He has nine goals and five assists for 23 points, 13 ahead of the next-closest teammate.
Maddock and sophomore Jayden Gyan each scored a goal to power the Bearcats (11-3-4, 5-2-3) to a 2-0 victory over Chatham and their first PAC playoff berth.
Senior goalkeeper Kameron Rock made three saves and earned the shutout for the Bearcats, who won two games last year.
Football
Grove City: Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) had 13 tackles as GCC posted its fourth straight win, 14-7 over Westminster.
IUP: Redshirt freshman Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. Whitlock collected nine receptions for 69 yards and a career-high two touchdowns in a 38-30 victory over Cal (Pa.).
Mercyhurst: Grad defensive end Jonas King (Mt. Pleasant) had three tackles, 2.5 for loss, in a 22-15 loss to Stonehill.
Men’s soccer
Grove City: Fifth-year defender Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) assisted a goal on a second-half cross as the Wolverines blanked Saint Vincent, 4-0, to clinch the No. 1 seed in the PAC Tournament.
Kimmich moved into a tie for fourth place in the program record book with his 17th career assist.
He is tied with his head coach, Mike Dreves, and former player Nate Jones.
In a 4-0 win over Washington & Jefferson, junior midfielder Colton Hudson (Franklin Regional) scored his first goal of the season.
Grove City (12-2-2, 9-0-1) also features two assistant coaches with Franklin Regional ties in Rand Hudson, the former Panthers’ coach, and Matt Kimmich.
Memphis: Senior Anthony DiFalco (Franklin Regional) has contributed three goals in 12 games for the Tigers.
DiFalco, who was a standout forward in the WPIAL, has grown accustomed to a facilitator role in midfield.
Women’s soccer
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Alexis Brown (Penn-Trafford) netted the game-winning goal with 90 seconds remaining to lift the Vulcans to a 2-1 victory over Clarion in PSAC action.
Maryland: Sophomore Ella Bulava (Latrobe) had made four starts and played in 17 games, providing one assist, for the Terrapins. She is a defender and midfielder.
Slippery Rock: In 13 games, freshman Abby Paterline is second on the Rock with 13 points on five goals and three assists.
SRU lists the versatile Paterline as a defender, midfielder and forward.
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Rylin Bugosh (Mt. Pleasant) scored her seventh goal of the season in a 3-0 victory over Bethany.
Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Meegan Williams had 14 kills and 24 digs, and classmate Dakota Hershberger added 12 kills and 16 digs to lead the Bearcats to a 3-0 sweep of Allegheny.
Seton Hill: Junior libero Kendyl Wagner was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. Wagner had 54 digs, nine assists and five aces across nine sets in back-to-back wins over Cal (Pa.).
Wagner set a conference record with 16 consecutive service points.
Thiel: Junior middle blocker Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week. DeLattre had 17 blocks over two matches, including a career-high-tying nine, to go with 14 kills, in a 3-1 win over Bethany.
Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony (Penn-Trafford) had a .400 hitting percentage and had nine kills and 14 digs in a 3-0 victory over Geneva.
Men’s swimming
Saint Vincent: Senior Jacob Dzurica (Hempfield) was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week. He won three events in the season opener, the 50-yard backstroke (23.86 seconds), 50-yard freestyle (21.31) and 100-yard backstroke (52.38).
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Micah Lohr (Hempfield) won the 100- and 200-yard butterflies in 57.25 seconds and 2 minutes and 19.7 seconds, and junior Daniel Jeffries (Hempfield) won the 200 freestyle (1:54.29) and 500 freestyle (5:29.66) in a 159-94 victory over Westminster.
Westminster: Grad student Gino Piraino (Franklin Regional) helped the 200-yard medley relay take third place in a 159-94 loss to Washington & Jefferson. The foursome finished in 1 minute, 52.17 seconds.
Women’s swimming
Westminster: Freshman Olivia Schrock (Hempfield) won the 200-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 26.04 seconds, took second in the 100 backstroke (1:10.79), and was third in the 100 butterfly (1:15.91).
Men’s golf
Pitt-Greensburg: Anthony Treonze and Zach Abdallah were named to the All-AMCC first team.
Senior Nick Thomas made the second team, and Ethan Rice found a spot in the third team.
Treonze had a team-best 76.33 scoring average and posted four top-10 finishes, winning the Hilbert Invitational. He was named the AMCC Athlete of the Week.
Abdallah averaged 76.92 and also finished inside the top 10 four times, with a win at the La Roche Invitational.
Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Gabi Moder was named the AMCC co-player of the year and also earned spots on the first team for doubles, with sophomore teammate Nancy Jiang, and second team for singles.
Last year, Moder was the conference player and newcomer of the year.
Freshmen Karen Rabe and Sophia Lepore (Norwin) made the first team at doubles, with Rabe also a second teamer in singles.
As a team, the Bobcats (4-7) made the conference semifinals.
