Westmoreland County campus clippings: WCCC women's cross country claims victory

While most college athletic programs are shut down for the fall, the Westmoreland Community College women’s cross country team is up and running — ahead of the pack.

WCCC posted three individual Top 3 finishes and took six of the top seven spots on the way to a victory Saturday at the Laker Strong Invitational hosted by Garrett College (Md.).

Sophomore Brooke Bertovich was the individual champion as she crossed the finish line in 23 minutes, 29 seconds.

Freshman Jenn Depree (Latrobe) finished second in 24:45, while sophomore Olivia Jumper was third in 24:47.

Other Wolfpack runners inside the top 10 included Nytasha Marteny (5th, 25:40), Anna Rubino (6th, 25:54) and Molleigh Henderson (Ligonier Valley) (7th, 26:25).

The previous week, WCCC won won its second straight Wolfpack Invitational as it registered three Top 5 finishes.

Bertovich was the top WCCC finisher and first among NJCAA runners with a time of 23:32.4.

Freshman Jennifer Depreee (Latrobe) was third in the NJCAA race at 24:06.9, while Jumper took fifth (24:54).

Women’s soccer

Pitt

Freshman defender Eva Frankovic (Norwin) has played in three of four games so far for the Panthers (4-0, 1-0 ACC). She has logged 73 minutes, including 49 against Appalachian State. Frankovic initially planned to play at Kent State before switching schools.

West Virginia

Redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Aunkst (Penn-Trafford) has started both games and played 180 minutes so far for the Mountaineers (2-0, 2-0 Big 12). Aunkst, who battled back from a torn ACL during her senior season of high school, played in 19 games last year and took three shots.

Men’s golf

Point Park

Senior Greg Fedor (Belle Vernon) shot 84 to help pace the Pioneers to a 339-350 dual-match victory over Carlow at Youghiogheny Country Club. Senior Matt D’Amico (Greensburg Salem) carded an 87 as Point Park placed seventh at the Shawnee State Invitational.
