Snow and chilly temperatures forced the Westmoreland County Golf Association to postpone its first event of the season May 9.

It might have been a blessing as the field nearly doubled in the three-man scramble event that will start at noon Saturday at The Madison Club.

“It turns out that we have a tremendous field, the best ever,” association spokesman Bob Allshouse said. “It should be really exciting because a lot of the top golfers in the county are playing.”

The association will follow all the CDC guidelines approved to play golf, including social distancing, no touching of the flagstick or rakes in sand traps and riding in separate carts.

Allshouse hopes the opening event’s field is a sign a lot of golfers will be participating in the six tournaments this season.

The second event of the season, the Amateur Better Ball at Greensburg Country Club, will be June 13, and the county junior amateur tournament will be June 18 at Latrobe Country Club.

In addition, the Francis Driscoll Parent-Child tournament is June 27 at Mt. Odin Golf Course, the men’s amateur tournament is July 11-12 at Hannastown Golf Club and the Senior-Super Senior tournament is Aug. 23 at Latrobe Elks Golf Course.

County residents, former residents and players belonging to courses within the county who want to play can sign up online at westcountygolf.com.
