Wheeling Nailers coach Derek Army signs three-year contract extension

The Wheeling Nailers signed a three-year contract extension with head coach Derek Army on Monday.

Serving as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ ECHL affiliate, the Nailers announced the contract via release. The contract is scheduled to keep Army on the Nailers’ bench through the 2025-26 season.

Army, 32, just completed his third overall season as the Nailers’ head coachand second complete season in that capacity. Initially joining the team as an assistant coach during the 2020-21 campaign, Army was promoted to interim head coach on April 22, 2021 when Mark French resigned as head coach.

During the 2021-22 season, Army guided the Nailers to a 37-31-0-4 record and their first playoff appearance in five seasons.

In 2022-23, the Nailer stumbled and missed the playoffs with a 29-38-0-5 record.

A forward during his playing career who spent parts of five seasons on the Nailers’ roster, Army has a 72-84-10 career record as the team’s head coach.
