Wheeling Nailers target Dec. 11 to open 2020-21 season
The Wheeling Nailers, ECHL affiliate of the Penguins, are aiming to open their 2020 season on Dec 11.
On Friday, the ECHL announced the Nailers will be one of 13 teams scheduled to open a 72-game schedule on that date along with the Allen Americans, Florida Everblades, Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Indy Fuel, Jacksonville Icemen, Kansas City Mavericks, Orlando Solar Bears, Rapid City Rush, South Carolina Stingrays, Tulsa Oilers, Utah Grizzlies and Wichita Thunder.
Twelve other teams will open a 62-game season Jan. 15: The Adirondack Thunder, Brampton Beast, Cincinnati Cyclones, Fort Wayne Komets, Idaho Steelheads, Kalamazoo Wings, Maine Mariners, Newfoundland Growlers, Norfolk Admirals, Reading Royals, Toledo Walleye and Worcester Railers.
The Atlanta Gladiators opted for a voluntary suspension for the season.
No schedules were announced. The regular season will conclude June 6.
Under this split-season scenario, league standings will be based on winning percentage during the regular season. The postseason format will be based on the eligible competing teams in the regular season.
The ECHL postponed play because of the coronavirus pandemic March 12, then canceled the remainder of the season March 15.
