For those wondering why Seton Hill is not opening the football season like its PSAC counterparts — games start Thursday, Friday and Saturday — there is a simple explanation.

The Griffins did not want to start the season a week later than usual but their initial opponent gave them no choice.

In the spring, Virginia Union pulled out of two-game, home-and-home agreement. The Griffins played at Virginia Union last season but the Panthers decided to void this year’s season-opening matchup in Greensburg.

Seton Hill had to scramble to find another opponent but with schedules full-up, it was not successful. The Griffins will play a 10-game schedule instead of 11.

“Obviously, we went to them last year and they chose not to honor their part of the agreement this year,” Seton Hill athletic director Chris Snyder said. “When they informed us that they would not be coming, it was quite late making it very difficult to find a home game to start 2019.”

Virginia Union has since scheduled a road game against Hampton on Saturday night.

The snarl on the schedule will delay the debut of Griffins’ first-year head coach Dan Day, an alum and former lineman. He was a member of the school’s first football team in 2005.

Seton Hill will start the year at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Offutt Field against East Stroudsburg.
