Another Pittsburgh native has earned a contract with the Washington Wild Things.

On Friday, the Wild Things announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Sean Kealey, who played at Baldwin and also recently finished his college career at Allegheny. Kealey pitched at Wild Things Park last summer during pod play with the Steel City Slammin’ Sammies.

In five appearances with the Sammies, Kealey threw eight innings, struck out 15 batters, and didn’t allow a hit or a run.

“(General Manager) Tony (Buccilli) was really enthusiastic about the direction that the team and the league was going in and I had been keeping in shape and contemplating a return and he made that decision really easy for me,” Kealey said. “Playing professionally close to home in a league this talented is hard to pass up.”

During his time at Allegheny, Kealey was named the NCAC Pitcher of the Year and also earned multiple all-conference honors. In his first season with the Gators, he had a 5-1 record in 14 appearances and 25 innings.

He earned the Pitcher of the Year selection in 2019 when he went 6-3 in 12 starts over 69 1/3 innings. He only allowed 61 hits and struck out 75 batters. After a few appearances this past summer in pod play, Kealey said he is ready to continue proving what he’s capable of.

“I feel like I’m coming in with something to prove not only to myself but to everyone who has supported me in baseball,” Kealey said. “If I get better every day and give my team a chance to win every time I’m on the mound, then I think we are going to do some pretty special things this year.”

After seeing him perform this past summer, Buccilli also believes the former Highlander can bring a lot to the table for the Wild Things.

“Sean had his senior season at Allegheny College get cut short and used those circumstances to showcase himself at the professional level,” Buccilli said. “He presents a large frame from the left side and a pitch mix to challenge hitters from both sides of the plate. Sean should provide depth to our group, pitch in meaningful innings, and receive great support from the local Baldwin community.”

Kealey joins a large group of Pittsburgh natives who will play for the Wild Things this season.

Former WPIAL stars like Blackhawk’s Joe Campagna, Central Catholic’s Dom DeRenzo, Norwin’s Tommy Shirley, North Allegheny’s James Meeker and Neshannock’s John Sansone have all signed with the Wild Things this offseason.
