The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed defenseman Clay Hanus to a one-year American Hockey League (AHL) contract for the 2022-23 season.

Hanus, 21, just concluded his junior career in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Last season, with the Portland Winterhawks, Hanus appeared in 68 games and posted a career-best 74 points (18 goals, 56 assists), second most in the WHL.

In eight postseason games, Hanus recorded six points (one goal, five assists).

Serving as the Winterhawks’ captain, the left-handed defenseman was coached by former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Johnston and played with a pair of Penguins prospects, goaltender Taylor Gauthier and defenseman Ryan McCleary.
