Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins sign ex-Rangers forward prospect Evan Vierling
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed forward Evan Vierling to a one-year AHL contract for the 2023-24 season Wednesday.
His signing was announced by the team via release.
Vierling, 20, was a fifth-round pick (No. 127 overall) of the New York Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft but never signed with that team.
As an “over-ager” at the junior level during the 2022-23 season, Vierling led the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Barrie Colts in scoring with 95 points (35 goals, 60 assists) in 60 games. League-side, Viering finished fifth in scoring.
A native of Aurora, Ontario, Vierling also won the William Hanley Trophy as the league’s most sportsmanlike player last season.
In addition to the Colts, Vierling also spent parts of two seasons with the OHL’s Flint Firebirds. Throughout his OHL career, Vierling had 212 points (75 goals, 138 assists) in 218 games.
A left-handed shot, Vierling attended the Columbus Blue Jackets’ 2022 training camp on a tryout basis and was released in September.
