The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed defenseman Mats Lindgren to a one-year American Hockey League contract on Friday.

A left-handed shot, the 19-year-old Lindgren (6-foot, 182 pounds) was a fourth-round draft pick (No. 106 overall) in 2022 by the Buffalo Sabres but never signed with that team and became an unrestricted free agent in May on his NHL rights expired.

Last season, with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League, Lindgren, an alternate captain, had 41 points (seven goals, 34 assists) in 63 games.

His father, also named Mats Lindgren, was a forward with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders and Vancouver Canucks throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
