What an afternoon on “the Hill.”

Sophomore pitcher Sean Williams was grooving strikes, his defense was sharp around him and the offense was efficient as 16th-ranked Seton Hill baseball flexed its muscles, all while giving its longtime leader another milestone victory.

Williams tossed the second no-hitter in school history, and 22nd-year coach Marc Marizzaldi grabbed career win No. 800 as the Griffins blanked visiting Pitt-Johnstown, 7-0, in the first game of a PSAC West doubleheader Saturday at the SHU Baseball Complex.

Williams struck out nine and walked three, getting eight groundouts and four flyouts to post the first no-hitter on the Griffins’ home field and first in the program since Joe Shaffer’s gem in 2017.

Shaffer struck out 12 and walked one in a 5-0 win over Northwood nine years ago in Winter Haven, Fla.

Williams, a 6-foot, 185-pound right-hander from Springfield, threw 114 pitches as he improved to 7-1.

Junior shortstop Owen Henne hit a two-run home run and added an RBI single for the Griffins.

In addition to catching the no-hitter, junior Heath Fetchik had two doubles and senior center fielder Jack Whalen (Norwin) also doubled in the win.

Seton Hill (29-7, 16-0) also won the second game, 7-0, for its fourth straight win and eighth in nine games.

Whalen had two hits, including a double, freshman second baseman Nate Simon had an RBI double and Henne drove in a pair.

Senior Jack Pletcher earned the shutout, striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings before giving way to grad student Christian Zilli (Hempfield), who didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way.

Marizzaldi, the program’s first coach who began leading the Griffins in 2004, is now 801-390-1.

He earned his 700th win in March, 2024.
