Kicker Matthew Wright is back for another stint with the Steelers.

In a move that indicates kicker Chris Boswell’s groin injury is a lingering issue, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Matthew Wright to the 53-man roster Wednesday.

Wright had been on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. By signing Wright, the Steelers must keep him on the 53-man roster for at least three games.

Boswell, the most accurate kicker in franchise history, missed the Steelers’ 35-13 loss at Philadelphia because of a groin injury. Nick Sciba was added to the practice squad and replaced Boswell for that game, but the Steelers waived him Tuesday and replaced him with the more experienced Wright a day later.

Wright filled in when Boswell was bothered by hip and groin injuries for three games during the 2020 season. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ regular kicker in 2021 when he made 21 of 24 field-goal attempts and 13 of 15 extra points.

With Kansas City, Wright replaced Harrison Butker for two games and made 3 of 4 field goals and all eight extra points.

Boswell signed a four-year, $20 million contract extension during training camp. In seven games this season, he has made 12 of 16 field goals and all nine extra points.
