Steelers running back Ralph Webb breaks into open field during practice Sunday, July 28, 2019 at St. Vincent College.

Beset by injuries at cornerback during training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent Trevon Mathis, a Western Pennsylvania native who attended Woodland Hills before enrolling at Toledo.

Mathis is 5-foot-10, 186 pounds. He was signed to provide depth in the wake of injuries to Justin Layne, Brian Allen, Artie Burns and Joe Haden. The only healthy cornerbacks entering the preseason opener Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were Steven Nelson, Mike Hilton, Cameron Sutton, Marcellis Branch and Jermaine Ponder, the latter joining the roster earlier in the week.

To make room for Mathis on the roster, the Steelers placed a waived/injured designation on running back Ralph Webb.

Mathis was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2018 but was waived before the season. He also spent time in the Alliance of American Football.

Mathis was named second-team all-state in his final season at Woodland Hills. At Toledo, he was a four-year contributor and two-year starter for the Rockets, and he played alongside current Steelers Ola Adeniyi, Diontae Johnson and Tuzar Skipper.
