Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mathew Sexton (80) during an NFL football practice, Saturday, July 24, 2021, in Pittsburgh.

One day after he muffed two punts, one of which resulted in a lost fumble, Mathew Sexton was among nine players cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers also cut tight end Marcus Baugh, running back Tony Brooks-James, cornerback Shakur Brown, defensive tackle T.J. Carter, wide receiver Anthony Johnson, cornerback Lafayette Pitts, guard Malcolm Pridgeon and safety Lamont Wade of Clairton and Penn State.

Sexton was trying to earn a roster spot as a punt returner, but he made a costly mistake in the fourth preseason game Friday night, a 34-9 loss at Carolina, when he couldn’t field a punt on the bounce. The fumble was recovered by the Panthers at the Steelers’ 15, and they turned the mistake into a touchdown and 10-0 lead.

Baugh, Brooks-James, Pridgeon and Pitt each were signed after training camp began because of injuries at their respective positions.

Brown and Wade were among the priority free agents the Steelers signed immediately after the draft.

The Steelers have 71 players on the roster and must get down to the 53-man limit by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
