UPPER DARBY — A man who tried to rescue his wife from their burning Pennsylvania home died after he was overcome by smoke, unaware that she had safely fled the residence.

Authorities say the fire broke out around 1:45 p.m. Saturday in the garage of a home in Upper Darby, west of Philadelphia.

The victim and another man were working on a vehicle when they smelled smoke. The victim went into the home to find his wife while the other man ran across the street to call 911.

The wife managed to escape the home unharmed, but her husband was found dead inside the residence. Their names haven’t been released.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
