Maura Tierney as Grace Poe and Jeff Daniels as Del Harris in “American Rust.”

In the premiere episode of Trib Extra’s “Pittsburgh Pop” podcast, host Tim Benz and TV Talk columnist Rob Owen discuss Pittsburgh pop culture news of the moment, including Sunday’s series premiere of filmed-in-Western Pa. Showtime premium cable drama “American Rust.”

How does “American Rust” compare to “Mare of Easttown,” the rival HBO drama filmed at the east end of the state? What are the odds of “American Rust” returning to film a second season in Pittsburgh?

Then it’s on to the recent Jason Momoa, filmed-in-Pittsburgh Netflix movie “Sweet Girl.” How does Pittsburgh look in this one? Is it any good? Might there be a sequel?

Finally, local TV newscasts continue to proliferate as WPXI-TV adds a 4 p.m. broadcast today with Susan Koeppen as the solo anchor. Are these newscast expansions necessary? Of course not! Will Pittsburghers watch anyway? If past is precedent, then 100%, yes, they will.
