Letter to the editor: Latrobe's mask decision the right one
I would like to commend the Greater Latrobe School Board for its masks-optional vote (“Greater Latrobe OKs mask-optional plan for 2021-22 school year by 6-3 vote” (July 28, TribLIVE). For those in disagreement, notice that masks are optional, not prohibited. Parents know what is best for their children.
Mandate masks in an environment of ever-changing, last-minute, conflicting “recommendations” from the state, and angst and frustration in the community are a likely result, as we have seen.
A larger battle to win would be getting each school district back into the business of education, exclusively, and not acting as an enforcement arm of the Department of Health or the CDC. They are not these things. Nor are they contact tracers or pandemic responders, as they had been told by the Wolf administration.
The district does a superb job of providing an education to our children; remain focused on that. The state and federal government have plenty of people to enforce their “recommendations” if they choose.
