Several flights between Pittsburgh and New York were delayed Friday morning following a “slight increase in sick leave” at two East Coast air traffic control facilities, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
At least four flights traveling from LaGuardia to Pittsburgh were delayed, along with at least seven flights from Pittsburgh to LaGuardia, according to the LaGuardia online flight tracker.
Arriving flights at LaGuardia were delayed an average of 1 hour and 26 minutes, according to information provided by the FAA.
One flight from Newark Liberty Airport to Pittsburgh was delayed, according to the Newark online flight tracker.
FAA spokesman Gregory Martin said Friday that it had augmented staffing, rerouted traffic and increased spacing between planes as needed.
The staffing problems were at air traffic centers in Jacksonville, Fla., and a Washington, D.C., center that controls high-altitude air traffic over seven states.
Martin says safety is being maintained during a period of “minimal impacts” on travel.
LaGuardia Airport in New York and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were both experiencing delays in takeoffs.
