Pittsburgh officials on Monday attempted to allay fears of a city on the brink after a weekend that saw three shootings, including one that met the criteria of a mass casualty incident.

“(This) is not a city bordering on violence. I want to make that clear,” said Olga George, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ed Gainey, explaining that no one was killed or “overly injured.”

“We are working closely to see if in the future we need to dispatch any additional resources. But right now, no plans [are] in place because obviously we’re in the early stages of just the investigation of all of these incidents,” Cydney Cooper, interim communications director for Gainey’s office, said at a press briefing.

Three shootings occurred in Pittsburgh and a fourth happened in neighboring Wilkinsburg.

Five people were shot, and another 10 people were injured, late Sunday night in East Liberty. The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are wounded.

Police responded to North Saint Clair and Broad streets at 11:45 p.m. for reports of multiple people with gunshot wounds, said Emily Bourne, a public safety spokeswoman. The shootings occurred in and around Garland Park.

Paramedics took three people to local hospitals.

One male victim was in critical condition, and another male was in serious condition. Both have since been upgraded to stable, Bourne said. EMS also transported a 17-year-old female with a graze wound. She also was in stable condition.

Separately, two males, 15 and 18 years old, transported themselves to an undisclosed hospital, Bourne said. It is unclear if they drove in the same vehicle.

EMS treated 10 people with graze wounds or minor injuries from falls at the scene, Bourne said. None required medic transportation, she said.

Shell cases were recovered on the court. Police were reviewing security footage from the park.

On Monday, residents who live near the park say the neighborhood is generally quiet. A few residents who asked not to be identified said the parking lot at the park was full of cars and teens Sunday night.

The park’s lights are turned off around 10 p.m., residents said, so it was hard to see what happened.

On Sunday morning a women was taken to the hospital after being grazed by a bullet in the city’s Perry South neighborhood. She remains in stable condition, and the investigation is ongoing.

Early Saturday morning, police responded to a call in the Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar neighborhood, where they discovered a man with a gunshot wound to his head. The man remained in critical condition Sunday evening. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made and police were continuing to gather witness statements, Bourne said.

On Friday night, one person was shot in the back while sitting in a vehicle in Wilkinsburg and another suffered abrasions while trying to flee the area. Allegheny County Police were unable to be reached for comment Monday about the investigation.
