South Fayette Community Day resumes successfully
Volunteers in place: check.
Weather forecast: optimal.
South Fayette residents ready to enjoy a Saturday in the park, even though it wasn’t the Fourth of July:
You bet.
Besides the date, the scenario at Fairview Park resembled in spirit what composer Robert Lamm describes in Chicago’s 1972 hit, with about 5,000 people attending South Fayette Community Day after waiting such a long time: three years since the last such event because of the covid-19 pandemic.
Picking up right where it left off, the Aug. 27 extravaganza had a lot of people talking, really smiling, as they listened to musicians play guitars and other instruments, singing for us all.
Mix in various games, activities, presentations, food and drink, all under a clear sky, and the proceedings couldn’t have gone much better.
“It was so good to connect with everyone again, including residents, businesses and the greater community,” Andrea Iglar, the township’s director of communications and community Development, said. “We already are looking forward to next year!”
She serves as secretary of the Community Day committee, which is chaired by Paula Willis, township director of parks and recreation. Other committee members are Asmita Srivastava, vice chair; Brian Turnwald, treasurer; Ian McNeil, township recreation coordinator; and Venkatesh Coonamamani, who serves on the parks and recreation board.
Turnwald is South Fayette branch manager for Dollar Bank, the main sponsor of Community Day and of the event’s main stage.
