The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will offer in-person and online services for Easter and Holy Week.

On Easter Sunday, Bishop David Zubik will celebrate Mass at 10 a.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland. He will be joined by Father Kris Stubna, who will serve as the homilist.

Easter Mass will also be broadcast through the diocesan website, the Diocesan YouTube Channel, Christian Associates TV, the St. Paul Cathedral Facebook page and Cablecast on Comcast channel 95 in the city of Pittsburgh.

Other Holy Week liturgies will be held at Saint Paul Cathedral and broadcast on the same platforms:

  • Palm Sunday Vigil at 6 p.m.
  • Palm Sunday Mass at 10 a.m.
  • Holy Thursday Chrism Mass at 10 a.m. (closed to the public)
  • Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m.
  • Good Friday Liturgy at 1:30 p.m.
  • Ecumenical Tenebrae on Good Friday at 7 p.m.
  • Easter Vigil at 8:30 p.m.

Zubik will also hold a Blessing of the City on Mt. Washington at 10 a.m. on Holy Saturday, followed by an Easter food blessing at Saint Paul Cathedral at noon.

“The pandemic has led us to new ways of connecting with God and each other,” Zubik said. “We are looking forward with renewed anticipation and joy to this holiest season of the year, as we share in the redeeming power of God’s love and grace.”

Starting on Palm Sunday, parishes within the diocese will increase occupancy to 75% of capacity, while still maintaining six feet of social distancing.

Also beginning on Palm Sunday, clergy, liturgical ministers and cantors who can maintain social distancing may remove their masks while speaking or singing. They will be required to put their masks back on when they finish.

“We are beginning to reclaim our community celebration,” Zubik said. “We thank God and our health care workers for progress against the virus. “

Nearly all parishes will be offering livestream access to Mass and other services during Holy Week.
