Family of Antwon Rose settles for $2M in civil case

The family of Antwon Rose II will receive nearly $1.2 million from a settlement in the federal civil lawsuit filed against East Pittsburgh and former police Officer Michael Rosfeld, court records show.

Rose, 17, was shot and killed by Rosfeld after a June 19, 2018 traffic stop in East Pittsburgh.

The federal lawsuit was terminated in U.S. District Court on Friday. Court records show the case filed by Rose’s parents was settled for a total of $2 million. Under the terms, Rabner Law Offices and McEldrew Young each will receive $400,000 for counsel fees, plus and a combined $26,000 for cost reimbursements.

The remaining $1,173,439 goes to Rose’s estate, the judicial order shows.

In March, Rosfeld was found not guilty of criminal charges in connection with Rose’s death, including homicide.

Fred Rabner, who represented Rose’s family, said he could only confirm a settlement in the case was reached and would not comment on the settlement amount.

Attorneys for Rosfeld and East Pittsburgh didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit contended Rose’s civil rights were violated, that Rosfeld’s actions were unlawful and unwarranted and that the lack of training and practices at the East Pittsburgh Police Department caused, in part, the teen’s death.

Separate civil suits filed by Rose’s family in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court remained active this week, according to court dockets.
