Police arrested two men and are looking for a third who they say repeatedly fired guns near the Coraopolis police station early Tuesday morning.

Nobody was hurt, according to police.

Coraopolis police officers heard the first gunshots as they left their station around 3:15 a.m., said Sgt. Robert Litterini.

After a few minutes, they heard additional shots.

The shots were coming from near the Montour Industrial Park, about 200 yards behind the station on the bank of the Ohio River.

Officers moved toward the industrial park, hearing more shots as they went. They could hear voices and twigs snapping, but couldn’t see the shooters, Litterini said. They called in police from Moon Township, Ohio Township and Robinson Township as backup. They also called in the Coraopolis Fire Department, which has an infrared imaging device they hoped to use to spot the shooters.

Once all the officers were in place, just as the sun rose, they moved in and apprehended two men on the industrial park property, Litterini said.

It appeared the men had been shooting across the river, in the direction of the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center, on Neville Island.

Police have not identified the men. It is not clear why they were shooting or what they were trying to strike, Litterini said.

Officers seized a 12-gauge shotgun. There were multiple .40 caliber shell casings found on the scene, but police did not find a corresponding weapon.

Police believe the weapon is likely in the possession of a third man who is believed to have left the scene before officers arrived.

Charges are pending. Litterini said police likely will charge the men with possessing a prohibited offensive weapon and recklessly endangering another person.
