A man shot during a July 2 robbery in Pittsburgh’s Spring Hill-City View neighborhood died Monday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

Julian Carpenter, 24, of Pittsburgh died at 10:27 p.m. at a city hospital.

He was shot by Onaje Dickinson, who was killed two weeks later in Penn Hills by a police officer investigating a similar robbery, according to court paperwork filed in connection to the robbery.

Carpenter was shot at an apartment in the 2100 block of Rhine Street. He thought he was meeting Shayla Johnson, a friend, but was instead robbed and shot, according to police. Johnson, 17, of Brighton Heights, is charged with conspiracy and criminal use of a phone, for luring Carpenter to the area, according to a criminal complaint filed against Johnson.

The gun used to shoot Carpenter matched the gun found in Penn Hills in the July 14 officer-involved shooting death of Onaje Dickinson.

Dickinson, 20, of Pittsburgh was shot and killed by Penn Hills police Officer Jared Rothert, who returned fire after Dickinson fired three shots while hiding in a basement. Police were searching for Dickinson because they suspected him in another robbery. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. found Rothert acted properly when he used his weapon.

Dickinson used similar tactics in several robberies since May, Zappala said.

The charges against Johnson are currently in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, but a hearing to move the case to juvenile court is set for Dec. 6, according to Zappala spokesman Mike Manko.

Police are still investigating Carpenter’s death, public safety spokesman Chris Togneri said.
