One of Pittsburgh’s autonomous vehicle companies confirmed layoffs on Thursday.
Argo AI, which is headquartered in the Strip District, didn’t specify how many people were let go. The company said in a statement that the layoffs were part of prudent adjustments after aggressive hiring over the last several years.
Since 2016 when the company started, Argo AI has hired more than 1,700 people.
“With incredible growth and progress made in our mission to deploy driverless vehicles, we are making prudent adjustments to our business plan to best continue on a path for success,” read a statement from the company.

The layoffs come as several former employees took to social media recently, claiming that the layoffs were widespread, according to WESA. According to their LinkedIn pages, some of the former employees worked as recruiters tasked with scouting and vetting potential employees.
Argo AI is part of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicle sector. According to Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2022, Argo AI is listed as an important piece in ranking Pittsburgh as the fifth best up-and-coming startup ecosystems in the U.S.
The company has also attracted significant investment over the years, including billions from auto makers like Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG.
In addition to Pittsburgh, Argo AI has offices in Michigan, California, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Germany.
