Two people were killed Thursday morning in a three-vehicle crash along Route 22 in Indiana County that closed the highway for hours, state police at Indiana said.

It might take days or weeks to confirm the victims’ identities, according to a release from Coroner Jerry Overman’s office.

They were in a Ford vehicle that traveled from Bowser Road in West Wheatfield onto Route 22, where their vehicle was hit about 8:30 a.m. by an eastbound garbage truck, police said. The Ford then was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Police said they believe the driver of the Ford did not stop at a stop sign before driving onto Route 22.

The crash occurred near Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, about 4½ miles east of the intersection of Routes 22 and 119 in Burrell Township.

The driver of the garbage truck was transported to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Firefighters and emergency medical services were at the scene for hours.

By 4 p.m. Thursday, the eastbound lanes of the highway were open. Police said the westbound lanes were opened by 6 p.m.

The crash investigation is continuing, with a state police forensics unit involved, police said.
