Sick of orange barrels and detours dictating your commute? PennDOT wants to hear about it.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation just opened an online survey for the public to submit feedback regarding its construction and maintenance services.

Announced Tuesday, the survey will be open through Oct. 21. It’s titled the “2025 PennDOT Construction/Maintenance Customer Satisfaction Survey.”

PennDOT said it has improved more than 2,600 miles of road — including over 900 miles of paving and begun work to repair, replace or preserve more than 230 bridges from January through August this year.

Some of the year’s most notable projects in progress include:

  • I-376 Parkway East Commercial Street Bridge Replacement
  • Artwork from local artists incorporated into the I-376 Parkway West Corridor
  • McKnight Road Improvement Project
  • Highland Park Bridge Preservation
  • McKees Rocks Bridge Preservation Project
  • Westmoreland County Local Bridge Preservation
  • Salina Bridge Replacement Project
  • Route 30 Improvement

The full details of PennDOT’s completed work and significant projects statewide can be found on its website. Local project details can be found here.

The 22-question survey asks participants how often PennDOT meets or exceeds expectations, as well as experiences with reporting concerns to the department. It asks if people use the state’s 511PA traveler information services.

That website allows people to check conditions on major roadways, see traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts and traffic speed information, as well as access more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

One of the questions asks if people encounter the following on their daily travel:

  • Highway congestion
  • Not knowing about traffic tie-ups or road construction in advance
  • Rough pavement or potholes
  • Interaction with pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Aggressive, distracted or impaired drivers
  • Long traffic queues at work zones

Another question asks how survey takers would rate PennDOT’s performance in the following areas:

  • Providing smooth roads
  • Making effective road repairs on a timely basis
  • Providing reasonable and predictable travel times on trips that you drive regularly
  • Removal of tire rubber, dead deer, and other debris from the roads
  • Providing opportunities for input and involvement in bridge and highway planning
  • Providing adequate notice of construction and work zones
  • Keeping the public informed regarding plans for road or bridge construction and repair

“The PennDOT team is serving Pennsylvanians every day, and each year we look for feedback on what we’re doing well and could improve,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said in the announcement. “The survey also lets the public tell us how they receive roadway information and helps us find potential educational opportunities.”
