UPMC enters takeover talks for Ohio's Trinity Health System
UPMC is looking to absorb Trinity Health System and its three hospitals in eastern Ohio.
CommonSpirit Health, the parent organization of Trinity Health System, said in a joint release Wednesday its has a nonbinding deal with UPMC to pursue a takeover agreement.
“Over the next several months, both entities will engage in discussions to work towards a definitive agreement, pending customary regulatory review and approvals,” CommonSpirit Health said in a release. “Trinity Health System and UPMC leaders hope to complete the affiliation as soon as possible.”
Trinity Health System’s flagship hospital in Steubenville is split into two campuses. Its West Campus serves as a general hospital, with an emergency room and surgical and medical inpatient units, while the East Campus provides more outpatient and long-term care services.
The system also includes smaller hospitals in Dennison and St. Clairsville as well as primary care facilities, urgent care clinics, a cancer treatment center and more scattered across Eastern Ohio.
A UPMC spokesperson said the organization looks forward to reaching an agreement and building on a history of collaboration. The two health systems have partnered for more than 20 years on cancer treatment and orthopedic services.
“As Trinity Health System and UPMC move forward with the process, including a customary due diligence period and regulatory review, we will keep our stakeholders and community updated of key developments,” the UPMC spokesperson added.
