Families can learn more about a new weapons detection system that will be in use this fall at Shaler Area’s high school and middle school.

A demonstration of the OpenGate system will begin at 6 p.m. April 29 at the high school, 381 Wible Run Road.

It’s being held a half-hour ahead of an active shooter community educational night for parents and caregivers that the district is holding with state police. That event is scheduled to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the high school auditorium, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

Pre-registration for the educational night is available, but not required, online at this link. A QR code to pre-register is also available on the district’s Facebook page. Walk-ins are welcome.

The school board recently approved buying through a state contract four OpenGate systems from CEIA at a cost not to exceed $85,000.

The district is getting the system after a 16-year-old high school student was accused of bringing a gun aboard a district bus in January. The student allegedly was in possession of a gun while riding home on a bus.

Following the demonstration of the OpenGate system, representatives from CEIA and OpenGate will be available to answer questions.
